The highly anticipated mob movie starring Robert De Niro, originally titled Wise Guys, has undergone some exciting changes. Now known as Alto Knights, the film is set to hit theaters on November 15, 2024. According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Barry Levinson has decided to delay the release from its original date of February 2, 2024, in order to coincide with the 2024 holiday season. Additionally, the film draws its new name from the infamous Alto Knights Social Club, a popular hangout spot for the Mafia in New York's Little Italy. Alto Knights will delve into the intense rivalry between Frank Costello and Vito Genovese, two notorious mob bosses from the 1940s and 50s. In a daring casting choice, De Niro will portray both feuding gangsters in a remarkable dual role. Joining the star-studded cast, Debra Messing and Kathrine Narducci will take on the roles of Costello and Genovese's respective wives.
Who Were Frank Costello and Vito Genovese?
Frank Costello and Vito Genovese, both loyal subordinates of the renowned New York mobster Charlie "Lucky" Luciano, found themselves at a crossroads when Luciano was incarcerated. Genovese took temporary control of Luciano's criminal empire but later fled to Italy to avoid legal repercussions, leaving Costello to assume leadership. Genovese eventually returned, sparking a power struggle between the two men as they vied for dominance over the New York Mafia. Their rivalry persisted until 1957 when Genovese sanctioned an assassination attempt on Costello, resulting in only a minor injury. Subsequently, Costello chose to retire from organized crime, relinquishing control of the city to Genovese. Nevertheless, Genovese's triumph was short-lived as in 1959, he faced conviction on drug-related charges and was incarcerated, eventually passing away ten years later.
