The inclusion of Hugh Jackman and the Predator's involvement with Amy brings humor to the plot, while the comedic twist lies in Rick's diminishing pills.
Now that Rick and Morty season 7, episode 1 has finally premiered, the show's best jokes reaffirm its comedic brilliance. Season 7 faced difficulties during production, with the controversy surrounding it. Despite the game-changing finale of season 5, which reshaped the show's entire universe, season 6 took a step backward, focusing on standalone episodes with simpler misadventures. Apart from the premiere and the conclusion of season 6, the latest episodes largely disregarded the events of season 5, episode 10, titled "Rickmurai Jack."
However, the criticisms of the storyline and humor in Rick and Morty season 7 soon became a minor concern. In January 2023, voice actor Justin Roiland faced charges of domestic battery, which resulted in Adult Swim severing ties with him. As a result, both title characters and several supporting roles in Rick and Morty season 7 had to be recast. The show's creators caused controversy by announcing that the new actors would be "soundalikes." While Roiland's other series, Solar Opposites, made a meta-joke about his departure, Rick and Morty season 7 chose to ignore the issue. Nevertheless, the final few episodes of Rick & Morty season 7 still feature plenty of hilarious gags.
10 Mr. Poopybutthole’s Fourth-Wall Breaking Intro
Ignoring Roiland's departure turned out to be the right decision. Despite the odds, episode 1 of season 7 of Rick and Morty, titled "How Poopy Got His Poop Back," is one of the funniest episodes in years. The plot starts off strong with the revelation that Mr. Poopybutthole has been staying with the Smiths after breaking his legs at the end of season 6. While it was known that dead characters could potentially return in Rick and Morty season 7, the comeback of Mr. Poopybutthole was still unexpected since he had only been used for post-credits scenes recently. Therefore, it was a hilariously surprising moment when Mr. Poopybutthole grabs the camera and addresses the audience.
9 Birdperson’s Strained Parenting
While Mr. Poopybutthole's return provided the initial comedic moment in "How Poopy Got His Poop Back," it was not the only instance of an unexpected character comeback for laughs. Once Rick acknowledged the need for an intervention for Mr. Poopybutthole, although he refused to use that term, he embarked on reuniting Mr. Poopybutthole's group of friends. This involved reaching out to Birdperson, who was last seen in a meaningful episode of Rick and Morty season 5 where he discovered he had a daughter. Discovering that Birdperson was now willing to abandon his daughter to indulge in alcohol with his friends was a hilariously surprising deviation from his usual behavior.
8 Gene’s Role in Rick and Morty’s Big Reunion
7 Rick’s Ridiculous Robot Ghost
: With the reunion of Gearhead, Squanchy, and Mr. Poopybutthole with Rick in season 7 of Rick and Morty, the show's antihero came to the realization that the intervention would require a sober designated driver. Surprisingly, Gene, an unassuming neighbor of the Smith family, was recruited as the final addition to this unusual and mismatched group. Watching this quiet suburbanite seamlessly blend into the wild partying and effortlessly prove his ability to hold his own was yet another unexpected and delightful twist.
Rick found himself needing to intervene in Mr. Poopybutthole's situation, acknowledging the necessity for it. In an attempt to remove his house guest, Rick developed a robot ghost. The plan involved constructing a robot, programming it with an unspecified "Business," and then disabling it before the full upload of its Business, resulting in an unfinished robot ghost. Although the initial joke was amusing, it was the ghost robot's appearance later in the season 7 premiere that truly brought everything together.
6 Hugh Jackman’s Unexpected Rick and Morty Cameo
Since Rick and Morty season 7's daring decision to replace Roiland dominated the show's return, "How Poopy Got His Poop Back" ingeniously slipped in an unexpected and side-splitting appearance by a renowned A-list celebrity. As Gene, Squanchy, Gearhead, Mr. Poopybutthole, and Rick made their grand entrance at an exclusive rave, they were greeted by none other than the iconic Hugh Jackman. Although Rick believed his prestige as an Oscars host would establish a connection with the star, it turned out that Gene was the one who truly captivated Jackman's attention.
5 The Predator’s Affair With Amy
The Predator made a surprising entrance in the early stages of "How Poopy Got His Poop Back," as Mr. Poopybutthole reluctantly confessed to having enlisted one of the franchise's legendary creatures to tail his ex-wife, Amy. However, Mr. Poopybutthole was appalled when he eventually located Amy later in the episode, only to discover that the Predator's involvement went beyond mere stalking. The comedic brilliance of the situation was heightened by the revelation that the iconic sci-fi horror monster was involved in a romantic relationship with Amy.
4 Mr. Poopybutthole’s Misguided Meta-Reference
3 Rick’s Fading Pills
Despite appearing to be at a disadvantage against the formidable Predator, Mr. Poopybutthole defied expectations. Those familiar with his previous appearances on Rick and Morty would recognize his unexpected skill in martial arts. The irony of this self-aware joke was that right after showcasing his fighting abilities, the inebriated Mr. Poopybutthole was swiftly overwhelmed and mercilessly defeated.
In one promo for Rick and Morty season 7, a major character return was promised, but the show pleasantly surprised its audience by featuring numerous supporting stars in the premiere. In a clever twist, the closing scene of “How Poopy Got His Poop Back” treated Rick, Hugh Jackman, Squanchy, and Gearhead to a Stand By Me-style adventure, narrated by Mr. Poopybutthole, as they embarked on their future misadventures. However, this humorous moment took an unexpected turn when Rick revealed that he had given everyone pills that caused them to vanish, claiming they were a miraculous hangover remedy.
2 Gene’s Special Meal Deal
1 Gene’s Wayward Lawn Mower
The fading pills had proven effective for everyone else, with the exception of Mr. Poopybutthole who experienced more intense pain than expected. Unfortunately, the outcome was even worse for Gene. He had recently purchased a generous fast food meal meant to be shared with his group of friends. However, just as he was about to rejoin them after a quick visit to the restroom at the Mexican restaurant, the entire gang mysteriously vanished. Consequently, Gene found himself alone, his meal snatched away, and completely clueless about the whereabouts of his vanished companions.
The appearances of Mr. Poopybutthole's return have often been dark, but none have been as hilariously grim as the post-credits scene in "How Poopy Got His Poop Back." In this scene, Gene's abandoned lawnmower, which he left behind to join Rick and the gang, is unveiled as it has wreaked bloody havoc throughout the entire town. The lawnmower takes one final victim, a police officer, before finally coming to a halt. Rick and Morty's bewildered policeman remarks that their boss could have survived if he had simply moved a few feet away.
