Following assault and battery allegations, former star Justin Roiland was fired from Adult Swim in January, catapulting the show’s production team on a mission to find new voice actors for the lead roles. Rick and Morty ended up deciding upon two actors, Harry Beldon and Ian Cardoni to portray Morty and Rick, respectively.

Cardoni and Belden were cast to be Roiland soundalikes, so the comparison between them and the former star was expectedly ample. The actors’ Rick and Morty performances were praised by creator Dan Harmon along with a number of fans, who lauded the pair’s faithful interpretation of the characters. Other viewers were quick to point out discrepancies in minute details of the show, including Rick’s lack of burping in season 7 and the overall lack of improvisation as compared with the previous six seasons. Audiences also found the new voice of iconic character Mr. Poopybutthole (Jon Allen) to be grating, paling in comparison to Roiland’s rendition of the role.
