Rick and Morty Season 7 Episode 5, titled 'Unmortricken,' has been praised as a "masterpiece," although some fans are unsure about what lies ahead for the main characters.
In the previous episode, 'That's Amorte,' which was part of the highly regarded seventh season of the popular sci-fi animated series, the storyline took an unexpected emotional turn, despite being centered around the concept of "suicide spaghetti."
With the release of Season 7 Episode 5, the previous events seem distant. This episode was highly anticipated, as it was expected to be a significant event in the storyline. Instead of revealing anything in the cold open, Adult Swim shared a clip of Rick flying through space, accompanied by a voiceover emphasizing the abundance of spoilers in the upcoming episode.
Now that 'Unmortricken' has finally premiered, it has received high praise as one of the best episodes of Rick and Morty so far. However, it has also left fans with some unease about what lies ahead. Warning: Spoilers are revealed ahead!
What is Rick and Morty Season 7 Episode 5 about?
In Rick and Morty Season 7 Episode 5, the opening scene is filled with intense action as it showcases a flashback of Evil Morty seizing control of The Citadel. After leaving Rick's multiverse, Evil Morty enters a perilous new dimension. While Evil Morty creates a semblance of paradise for himself, his newfound luxurious residence begins to deteriorate. Meanwhile, our protagonist Rick, also known as Rick C-137, and his sidekick Morty are preoccupied with "fracking" the Central Finite Curve. Their ultimate goal is to locate and confront Rick Prime, putting an end to their ongoing pursuit.
Evil Morty, emotionally detached, assists Rick in devising a strategy to locate the genuine Rick Prime amidst decoys. Amidst their argument, Morty accidentally vaporizes one decoy, causing it to transform into a black substance that engulfs all three of them.
They enter a trap and discover a multitude of different Ricks, including versions resembling Indiana Jones and James Bond, who have been relentlessly pursuing Rick Prime. A pre-recorded message from the supervillain appears on a screen, revealing that he has successfully eradicated all incarnations of Rick's wife Diane across multiple dimensions using a formidable weapon known as the Omega Device, capable of exterminating any targeted individual in all their iterations.

Rick and Evil Morty successfully evade the trap by synergizing their portal guns and utilizing the decoy's goo. All three Mortys and Rick proceed to Rick Prime's headquarters, where Rick Prime employs the Omega Device on Slow Mobius. As a result, all Slow Mobius instances in the multiverse vanish into thin air.
Rick and Rick Prime engage in an intense battle, widely regarded as one of the most impressive action sequences in the series thus far. Ultimately, after overpowering Rick, Rick Prime encounters our Morty, who is actually Rick Prime's grandson originating from his home planet.
However, just as Rick Prime appears poised to triumph over the three of them, it is revealed that the Morty wearing an eyepatch is, in fact, Evil Morty, who had switched places with the regular Morty. Evil Morty successfully overpowers Rick Prime, restraining him with a device and granting Rick the opportunity for long-awaited vengeance. In a brutal, merciless manner, Rick ruthlessly delivers punches to Rick Prime until he meets his demise.
When he emerges covered in blood, Evil Morty reveals that although he has deactivated the Omega Device, he possesses its advanced technology and has the ability to terminate the Rick experiment at any given moment. Morty inquires as to why he refrains from doing so, to which Evil Morty responds, "Using a weapon like this wouldn't allow me to remain undisturbed. Do you think I desire a horde of revenge-seeking Summers pursuing me?"

In a callback to Season 1 Episode 6, the final sequence shows Rick and Morty burying their deceased selves while the melancholic song "Look on Down From the Bridge" by Mazzy Star plays.
In Season 7 Episode 5, this song resurfaces as Rick attempts to readjust to his ordinary existence after successfully finding and eliminating his archenemy. However, like in any typical revenge story, the resolution fails to provide him with the expected contentment.
The post-credits scene unveils an alternative path for Rick, should he have forsaken his revenge scheme. In this sequence, Slow Mobius' wife ardently pursues her own quest for retribution. Along her journey, she encounters a different person, forging a lasting bond as they together nurture the Slow Mobius offspring.
Rick and Morty fans fear future after “masterpiece” Season 7 episode
Concerned fans have expressed worry about the implications of Rick finally catching up to Rick Prime and resolving their ongoing chase. One fan on Reddit pointed out that Rick's accomplishment of killing the man who had caused him so much turmoil seems to have rendered his life meaningless. Another fan questioned the timing of such a significant episode in the middle of the season, leaving them curious about what the finale will bring.
A third person remarked, "This episode had a remarkably self-aware quality, and I can't help but believe it was intentional. Much like Rick, we finally received what we had eagerly anticipated - a serialized episode that featured Prime Rick and Evil Morty, and not only progressed the plot, but also concluded it. However, similar to Rick, I felt a sense of emptiness." A fourth individual chimed in, saying, "Looks like I wasn't alone in feeling this way. While I enjoyed it, the pursuit of revenge truly leaves us with a shallow outcome. Now what?"
Mostly fans gave high praise to the episode, with a number of them considering it to be one of, if not the best Rick and Morty episode ever created. One person on X/Twitter exclaimed, "Roll up and rewatch that Rick & Morty episode. That was an absolute masterpiece." Another Reddit user chimed in, stating, "This is exactly why I watch the show," while a third person added, "Hands down, the best episode ever."
Many people have expressed their enthusiasm regarding the potential direction of the story, particularly as the creators have the opportunity to highlight Evil Morty as the central figure in future developments. This is due to Evil Morty now possessing the ability to eradicate all Ricks and Mortys across various dimensions.
"One individual stated, 'This episode successfully tackles the challenges of Evil Morty and Rick Prime in a single instance. It sets the stage for an enjoyable remainder of the season, while embracing the core qualities that have always made this show exceptional – boundless possibilities, limitless imagination, and the internal struggle of the heart. Rest in peace, Uncle Slow.'"
Another person exclaimed, "Regardless, I thoroughly enjoyed the episode. The collaboration between the characters was fantastic, and I was satisfied with the outcome. I am eagerly anticipating what will unfold in the ongoing storyline. Numerous inquiries were addressed, and it brings me great joy."
