Apple is expanding the capabilities of iPads beyond their traditional use as mobile devices, moving them closer to functioning like computers. With the latest iPadOS 17 update, users can now connect external USB webcams and cameras to their devices. This feature supports both actual webcams and cameras connected via USB, including those connected through devices such as the Elgato Cam Link 4K. Additionally, cameras with a webcam mode may also be supported. Currently, external cameras are only available for use during FaceTime calls, as this feature relies on a new API that developers will eventually need to integrate into their applications.

With the increasing number of developers embracing this feature and its integration into more apps, iPads have the potential to transform into powerful mobile streaming devices. The built-in front cameras on iPads are already impressive, making it unlikely that users will need any additional equipment unless they have particular requirements. Nevertheless, having this functionality is a valuable asset to any iPad user. Currently, iPadOS 17 is only accessible as a developer preview, but it is expected to be available to the public later this year, making it highly likely that this feature will become widely used.
