For almost two decades, Mac users have had access to widgets, albeit confined to a secondary panel or screen. However, a major development is underway as widgets are set to make their way onto the desktop, with iPhone owners receiving additional features. Apple has unveiled some of the features that will be included in the upcoming macOS Sonoma system update, which includes a significant revamp of widgets. In the new update, widgets will remain visible below your notifications, but you'll also have the option of pinning them to your desktop. This feature resembles Gadgets on Windows Vista and 7, or desktop widgets on KDE Plasma on desktop Linux. Additionally, the widgets will use accent colors based on your desktop background.
With the new widget functionality in macOS Sonoma, you can add widgets from your iPhone to your Mac seamlessly. This means that even if some Mac apps don't offer native widgets, you can use your iPhone widgets to fill that gap. One notable example is starting a car remotely from your Mac using the car's iPhone widget, which Apple demonstrated. However, to use this feature, you need an iPhone that is near your Mac. The update will be available later this year as a free upgrade for compatible Macs.
