Fantagraphics is set to revive Marvel's most elusive horror comics with an exciting new collection titled Adventures into Terror. While Marvel Comics is currently renowned for its superhero stories, it is important to note that this was not always the case. In fact, superheroes emerged as a response to the stifling impact of the Comic Code on the industry.
Established in 1954, the Comics Code Authority was introduced as a preferable alternative to government regulation. However, by the 21st century, the Comics Code became largely obsolete, and in 2010, DC and Archie Comics were the final publishers to relinquish it.
The implementation of the Code had an immediate impact on the comic book industry, particularly on the once-thriving horror comics market. As a result, these horror comics have become highly sought after and extremely rare, including Marvel’s Adventures into Terror. Recognizing the demand, publisher Fantagraphics is currently addressing this scarcity by releasing a new collection.
Fantagraphics announces Adventures Into Terror collection
The Atlas Comics Library: Adventures into Terror Volume One will soon be available, as announced by ScreenRant. Fantagraphics is taking the initiative to reprint Marvel's renowned genre titles, which have unfortunately faded into obscurity over the years. This 180-page hardback marks the beginning of their efforts.
Fantagraphics relaunches the chilling horror anthology series, Adventures into Terror, with a captivating collection of eight issues. Originally published by Atlas Comics, known for later transforming into Timely Comics in the ‘50s and eventually adopting the iconic name Marvel Comics in the 1960s.
The comics are now available again after decades, marking the first time they have been reprinted. These titles were originally canceled due to their frightening content, which was what made them so popular in the first place.
Adventures into Terror are Marvel’s rarest horror comics
Adventures into Terror may appear mild by today's standards, but back in the 1950s, children were captivated by its frightful and macabre content. However, this shocking material triggered a widespread concern among parents, prompting a moral panic. The outcry against horror comics, combined with the release of Fredric Wertham's Seduction of the Innocent, compelled the comic industry to reassess and reform its publishing methods.
Under the new Comic Code, horror comics were practically prohibited, causing the value of existing copies to soar. Presently, collectors eagerly seek out copies of Adventures into Terror, willing to pay anywhere between $90 to $400.
