The rumored roster for Mortal Kombat 1 has been making waves, with several fighters from the franchise's mid-2000s era potentially making a return. Serving as a continuity reboot, the game follows Fire God Liu Kang as he creates a peaceful new universe for Earthrealm's residents, only to have it threatened by the return of Shang Tsung. The recent Summer Game Fest trailer revealed some of the familiar faces that will be joining the fray, including Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Kitana, Mileena, and Johnny Cage. The roster will be divided into two groups: the primary set of playable characters and a selection of Kameo fighters who can be summoned with a single button press.

A potential leak for Mortal Kombat 1 has emerged, claiming to reveal the full playable roster for the upcoming game. According to a post on r/Mortalkombatleaks by Reddit user MarkT_D_W, the Krypt feature from the last three games will be eliminated in Mortal Kombat 1. The leak also includes a list of 24 alleged playable characters, with 19 already named. This cast features a combination of familiar Kombatants and characters from the franchise's extensive history.

The leaked list includes many recognizable names for fans of Mortal Kombat's mid-2000s games, which featured the franchise's transition to 3D graphics on sixth-generation consoles. Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has hinted at the appearance of fighters like Reptile and Reiko from MK4 in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 1, and the leak confirms the inclusion of these beloved characters. Other fan favorites in the leaked roster are the chaos-loving Havik from Mortal Kombat: Deception, the vampire Nitara from Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, and Lin Mei, an Outworld warrior who hasn't been seen since Mortal Kombat: Armageddon in 2006. It is important to note that this leak is not yet official, and any information from it should be met with skepticism until confirmed by NetherRealm. Nonetheless, the leaked roster aligns with past social media teases by Ed Boon, and if it is legitimate, fans can expect familiar faces from Mortal Kombat's early 3D era. Furthermore, the incomplete roster suggests that NetherRealm may have more surprises in store for the game's launch later this year.

Mortal Kombat 1 will be released on September 19, 2023, for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
