On Sunday, November 5, Ellingson's lifeless body was discovered in a bedroom at his residence in Fontana, California, as confirmed by the coroner's division of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. While the exact cause of death remains unknown, an autopsy has been scheduled for Monday.

Ellingson's father, Michael, revealed to TMZ that his son was residing in a sober living facility when he tragically passed away. The news of his death came as a shocking blow to his family.

Before his notable appearance in My Sister's Keeper, Ellingson began his acting career as a child star on various television shows such as Titus, General Hospital, and That Was Then. Additionally, he portrayed the character of Jack Bauer's nephew, Josh, on the popular television series 24 and had a minor role in Clint Eastwood's film, Letters From Iwo Jima.

Ellingson hadn't been seen on screen for over ten years before he passed away. His final acting gig was playing Kyle Harmon, the son of Horatio Caine (David Caruso) and Julia Winston (Elizabeth Berkley) on the TV show CSI: Miami. From 2007 to 2010, Ellingson made appearances in a total of 18 episodes of the series.
