Evan Ellingson, known for his role in My Sister’s Keeper, passed away due to an accidental fentanyl overdose, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the San Bernardino’s coroner’s department. The 35-year-old actor was found deceased in his Fontana, California home on November 5.
Evan's father, Michael Ellingson, revealed to TMZ that his son had been residing in a sober living home following his past battles with addiction. Prior to this, Evan had spoken about his struggles with drug addiction in a five-minute testimonial for the substance abuse rehab center, River's Edge Ranch.
In a 2021 YouTube video, he reflected on his life before drugs, describing it as "kinda fun" but admitting that he got into "heavy drugs" at 19, which led to his rock bottom. The death of his brother from a heroin overdose pushed him over the edge, but also made him realize that there was more to life. Despite this realization, he fell into a "really dark" place in his absence.

"I would have sacrificed everything I had just to bring my brother back, but I knew it was impossible," he explained. "It led me into a dark and scary downward spiral where nothing seemed enjoyable anymore."
Abigail Breslin, Evan's costar in My Sister's Keeper, shared a heartfelt tribute to him after his passing. In an Instagram post on November 6, she described Evan as a kind, funny, and incredibly talented person who was dedicated to delivering exceptional performances. She also remembered him as a playful prankster who loved Red Bull and had an infectious energy that made him the life of the party.
After filming, Breslin, 27, admitted that the two didn't keep in touch much, but she still thought about him often.
"He always remained in my thoughts as a wonderful and kind soul, and I am thankful to have known him," she expressed. "My thoughts and sympathies are with his family at this difficult time. Evan, I believe that Heaven will embrace you with open arms. While your time on earth was tragically short, your humor, energy, kindness, and shining light will endure forever. I wish you peace on your journey to the unknown, and who knows ... maybe one day, we'll meet in Montana."
