Reggie Bush recently shared how being drafted by the New Orleans Saints was a significant turning point in his life.

During an appearance on CBS Mornings, the 39-year-old reflected on the events leading up to his NFL debut in 2006. He mentioned that during a challenging time when he was battling depression and thoughts of suicide, the entire city of New Orleans embraced him, lifted him up, and gave him the opportunity to prove himself once again.

Bush, a former running back at the University of Southern California, won the prestigious Heisman Trophy in 2005. However, he faced accusations of receiving money and goods from his college, violating NCAA rules. This led to an investigation, and in 2010, he voluntarily gave up his 2005 Heisman Trophy.

After more than a decade, the Heisman Trust made an announcement on Wednesday, April 24, stating that Bush's trophy would be returned to him. The Trust mentioned the significant changes in college athletics as the reason for their decision. Bush expressed his gratitude by sharing a photo on Instagram, reuniting with his prize and captioning it with, "No one can take from you what God has for you."

Friends, fellow athletes, and fans shared their excitement in the comments section to celebrate the milestone. Olympian Allyson Felix expressed her joy by writing, “Finally!! One of the greatest to ever do it.” Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel also joined in, welcoming back the achiever with the words, “Welcome back my brother.”

Reggie Bush was selected as the first round NFL draft pick for the New Orleans Saints in 2006.

During his time at USC in 2005, Bush achieved over 2000 yards from scrimmage and scored 18 touchdowns. He expressed to CBS that reclaiming his trophy felt like a goal he had been envisioning for a long time.

"I've been through the highs and lows for many years - I've shed tears over it, I have. But at this moment, I was just soaking it all in, feeling happy, enjoying the moment, and knowing that we achieved this," he shared.

When questioned about how it felt to hold the trophy again after all these years, Bush humorously replied, "It was just as heavy as I remembered. I thought, 'Yep, it's still heavy.'"

Bush spent five seasons with the New Orleans Saints, winning Super Bowl XLIV in his final year with the team. After his time with the Saints, he played for the Miami Dolphins, Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers, and Buffalo Bills before retiring in 2017. Following his retirement, Bush became a commentator and studio analyst for Fox Sports.
