Liverpool have agreed a deal with Southampton for Romeo Lavia, We News understands.
However, Chelsea are still pushing to sign Lavia and had been close to an agreement with Saints late last week.
According to sources, the agreed-upon total package between Liverpool and Southampton on Sunday night is valued at £60m. Liverpool, who had previously failed to secure Moises Caicedo and lost him to Chelsea, found out that the Blues have reached a deal with Brighton worth a British record of £115m for Caicedo. This comes after Liverpool had an accepted offer of £111m, only for the 21-year-old to reveal his intention to join Chelsea.
Southampton had been steadfast in their demand for £50m for 19-year-old Lavia. Last week, Chelsea submitted a £48m offer, while Liverpool had their three previous bids rejected earlier this summer.
Chelsea is aiming to secure two midfielders during this transfer window. However, negotiations with Leeds United regarding the acquisition of Tyler Adams fell through last week due to an inability to reach a mutual agreement.
Lavia, a Belgium international, is expected to depart Southampton after the team's relegation from the Premier League last season. Despite having four years remaining on his contract, he did not participate in the team's win against Sheffield Wednesday and was also excluded from the squad for the recent Carabao Cup loss to Gillingham and the 4-4 draw with Norwich.
