Rebecca Romijn, 50, recently broke her silence regarding the misconduct scandals involving X-Men directors Brett Ratner and Bryan Singer. In an interview with The Independent, she revealed that she had initially chosen not to address the #MeToo movement, but now feels compelled to speak out. Romijn stated that both directors had faced consequences for their actions, particularly Brett Ratner. She concluded that she no longer feels the need to elaborate further on the matter.
Romijn portrayed Mystique in the original X-Men series, which was directed by Singer in four of the movies. In 2014, Singer faced accusations of drug abuse and sexual misconduct from cast members of X-Men: Days of Future Past. However, Singer denied these allegations, stating that they were completely false and malicious. Romijn, on the other hand, chose to focus solely on Singer's talent as a filmmaker and separate it from the scandal.
"He is an incredible filmmaker, you know? It was truly impressive observing his work. Ultimately, it's a personal decision whether or not to separate the person from their professional achievements," Romijn explained to a U.K. newspaper. She acknowledged that Singer has faced his fair share of controversies and that other cast members had addressed their concerns with him. However, since she was not present during those discussions, she cannot provide insight on the matter.
Following Singer's removal before the release of 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand, Ratner, aged 54, assumed the directorial role. In 2017, several individuals, including Olivia Munn and Elliot Page, came forward, alleging that Ratner had subjected them to sexual assault and harassment during production eight years prior. Ratner vehemently denied these allegations at the time.
Romijn, who tied the knot with Jerry O'Connell in 2007 and shares 13-year-old twin daughters with him, also recounted the on-set "drama" during the making of the movie in her interview on Wednesday.
There was drama on set, and I personally witnessed and heard a lot about it. Additionally, it was evident that he occasionally did not come to set prepared. However, it was still impressive to see him show up and effortlessly direct incredible scenes without any prior preparation. Despite not wanting to criticize others, Romijn was willing to make an exception for Ratner, expressing her unhappiness about working with him. It is worth noting that he has now been canceled.
