Warning: This article contains MAJOR SPOILERS for Apple TV+'s Silo and mild book spoilers.
Summary
Rebecca Ferguson, star of Silo, hints at deviations from the original story in the upcoming second season of the Apple TV+ show.
In Silo season 2, viewers will witness Juliette's journey as she ventures into the outside world and embarks on a visit to a different Silo.
In season 2, the changes are likely to be connected to Shift, the second novel in the series, and will delve deeper into the character of Bernard Holland, portrayed by Tim Robbins. Rebecca Ferguson, who stars in Silo, hints at alterations from the original source material. The Apple TV+ sci-fi series is an adaptation of Hugh Howey's Silo book series, which consists of Wool, Shift, and Dust. Ferguson's character, Juliette Nichols, is an engineer responsible for maintaining the generators in the lower levels of the underground Silo. A sequence of tragic events propels Juliette into an unexpected position of authority as she begins to uncover the Silo's conspiracies and the truth about the outside world.
In a pre-SAG-AFTRA strike TVLine interview, Ferguson alluded to the level of adherence that Silo season 2 will have to the books, without explicitly mentioning if she meant Wool or Shift. See Ferguson's remarks below:
"Our aim is to closely align with the book, although we do have valid reasons to incorporate some alterations, which will become evident upon viewing."
What To Expect From Silo Season 2
Juliette made a disturbing discovery: the outside world was a toxic wasteland, shattering the illusion of the lush paradise she and others had glimpsed. With the protection of her suit's heat tape, she manages to survive the toxicity and, with newfound awareness, ventures forward, realizing that her Silo is just one of many. Silo season 2 will follow Juliette as she explores this previously unknown world outside her Silo. As the season adapts the rest of Wool, Juliette will soon venture to another Silo, a logical next step after the reveal in season 1.
Regarding the changes hinted at by Ferguson, it is likely that these changes are tied to the second novel in the series, Shift. Much of Shift takes place centuries before Juliette's time, before humanity sought shelter in underground silos. While the show needs to delve into this crucial backstory, it may not dedicate as much time to the past as the book does. It would be impractical for the show to focus too heavily on events without Juliette, the other surviving season 1 characters, and the new characters Juliette will encounter.
In Silo season 2, there is a need to delve deeper into Tim Robbins' character, Bernard Holland. His anxiety regarding Juliette's survival and various hints in season 1 imply that he does not hold the highest position of power in this world. Understanding who he reports to will reveal more about Silo's enigmatic universe. Additionally, season 2 will likely continue to follow the journeys of Robert Sims (played by Common), Martha Walker (portrayed by Harriet Walter), Lukas Kyle (played by Avi Nash), and Paul Billings (portrayed by Chinaza Uche). If Silo season 2 maintains the same captivating elements as season 1, it has the potential to be an enthralling character-driven drama with an intriguing science-fiction backdrop.
