Justin Roiland, the original voice actor for Rick and Morty, has been replaced in Season 7. Here's what you should be aware of regarding this change.
According to the Season 7 synopsis, Rick and Morty have returned and are back to their usual selves. With a new season comes endless possibilities, such as exploring what's happening with Jerry, the potential existence of an evil version of Summer, and the possibility of returning to high school. However, it remains uncertain if they will indeed go back. One thing is for sure, though: there will probably be less explicit language compared to the previous season.
If you've been observant, you may have noticed that Rick, Morty, and various other characters now have new voice actors. But what prompted this change? Let's delve into the details to find out.
Why did Rick and Morty get new voice actors?
Adult Swim severed its relationship with Justin Roiland in January 2023 following the emergence of domestic assault charges against him, which were later dismissed. As Roiland had provided the voices for characters such as Rick, Morty, and various others, the show needed to recruit new actors to take his place.
Reports emerged on January 12 that Roiland had been arrested in Orange County, California on charges of felony domestic assault, although he vehemently denied these accusations. On January 24, Adult Swim made the announcement that they had decided to part ways with Roiland, placing fellow co-creator Dan Harmon at the helm.
In March, Roiland's charges were dismissed. He used social media to convey his gratitude for the dismissal but acknowledged that he still feels profoundly disturbed by the false allegations made against him during the course of the case.
Since then, Rick and Morty fans have been on tenterhooks over who might replace the various characters Roiland voiced, which include:
Rick Sanchez
Morty Smith
Mr. Meeseeks
Albert Einstein
Mr. Poopybutthole
Taddy Mason
Cromulons
Noob-Noob
Truth Tortoise
Glar
Michael
Mr. Always Wants To Be Hunted
Mr. Frundles
In episodes 'Interdimensional Cable 2: Tempting Fate' and 'Rixty Minutes', Roiland provided the voices for different characters.
The creators kept the identity of the voice actors for the main characters a secret until the Season 7 premiere on Sunday. The credits revealed that Ian Cardoni now lends his voice to Rick, while Harry Belden voices Morty. Additionally, John Allen is now the voice of Mr. Poopybutthole.
