Rafael Nadal impressed with his return to singles action on Tuesday, defeating Dominic Thiem in straight sets at the Brisbane International in Australia. The 22-time grand slam champion played his first singles match in almost a year after struggling with injuries last season.
"Today marks an incredibly emotional and significant day for me following what has undoubtedly been one of the most challenging years of my tennis career," Nadal said during his on-court interview after securing a win in the first round.

Rafael Nadal has the opportunity to make a comeback after a year and play in front of an amazing crowd. He believes he is playing at a very positive level. Additionally, he doesn't rule out continuing beyond 2024.
Nadal made a comeback on Sunday at the Brisbane International, playing his first match since last January alongside doubles partner Marc Lopez. Despite losing in straight sets to Australians Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson, Nadal's performance showed flashes of his brilliance. In his victory against former world No. 3 Thiem, the Spaniard demonstrated his agility and skill with some magical winners, reminiscent of his past performances.
At 37 years old, Nadal announced in May that 2024 may mark the end of his time on tour. However, on Sunday, he left the possibility open of continuing beyond that year. "You never know what the future holds. I can't predict how I'll be in the next six months," Nadal stated, according to Reuters.
"I cant predict if my body will allow me to enjoy tennis as much as I enjoyed the past 20 years."
Nadal faces Australian Jason Kubler in the round of 16 on Thursday.
Players often use the Brisbane International tournament as preparation for the Australian Open. Nadal is aiming to make a comeback in Melbourne, where he has previously won the tournament twice. CNN's Issy Ronald provided reporting for this story.
