Naomi Osaka suffered a defeat at the Brisbane International on Tuesday as she made her comeback to competitive tennis. The four-time grand slam champion lost in three sets - 3-6 7-6 6-4 - to Karolína Plíšková, but maintained a positive outlook after the loss.
"I'm not entirely certain if I should be too tough on myself, if that makes sense," Osaka informed reporters.
"I was aware before the match that we had specific statistics on her serving patterns, but then she threw a curveball at me."
"I anticipated that she would perform exceptionally, and whenever we compete, it's consistently a three-set match. The week seemed shorter than expected, but I believe it was a fantastic match and I thoroughly enjoyed it."
Osaka had taken a break from the game for over a year to focus on her mental health before giving birth in July.
The ex-top-ranked player made a triumphant comeback to tennis on Monday by defeating Tamara Korpatsch of Germany in her first competitive match in 15 months and carried that strong performance into the first set against PlÃÅ¡ková.

At 26 years old, she showed her strength by winning the first set and narrowly lost the second set after a close tie-break. Plíšková, who is also coming back from an injury, relied on her strong serve to win the final set and secure her spot in the next round.
Osaka will now focus on the Australian Open in Melbourne, set to begin on January 14. Although uncertain if she has the necessary game to pursue a third title, Osaka expressed her joy at being back on the court.
"I'm finding much more enjoyment in the game now, and I've come to understand that there are many things beyond my control," she remarked.
"I'm also more conscious of the fact that I'm competing against the best players in the world. We both have a chance to win."
After giving birth, I have worked really hard to get back in shape. I feel that I should really savor these moments. Seeing Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams retire has made me realize that a tennis career is not very long, so I want to make the most of it while I still can.
