Rachel McAdams, 45, is famous for her sunny blonde hair. But recently, she surprised everyone by switching back to dark hair. She debuted her brunette tresses at the Broadway opening of An Enemy of the People in New York City on Monday, March 18.

The actress had her chocolate-colored hair parted to the side and styled in loose curls, highlighting her subtle honey highlights.

McAdams recently debuted a new look with a bronde crown (a mix of blonde and brown hues) while promoting her play Mary Jane in New York City. In the play, she portrays the main character, a single mother facing a challenging family situation. Previews for the show will start on Tuesday, April 2nd.

McAdams has had different hair colors in the past. In 2014, she had brown-mahogany hair during the Most Wanted Man press tour. She also sported a deep chestnut bob with a blunt fringe in 2004.

Rachel McAdams has sported different hair colors throughout her acting career. In the movie Wedding Crashers in 2005, she had dark hair, a stark contrast from her bleach blonde locks in the original Mean Girls the year before. Apart from blonde and brunette, McAdams has even experimented with pink streaks.

McAdams’ longtime colorist, Craig Moir, shared with Allure in January 2012 that the actress is a natural brunette. She has also talked about her evolving appearance, mentioning to LiveJournal in 2008 that she enjoys changing things up.

She recalled, “Even when I was young, I wanted to change my hair color.” McAdams even experimented by dyeing her hair with Kool-Aid. She explained, “You dunk your head in a bowl of red Kool-Aid for four hours, and it comes out apricot. Not that pretty, but it is still transforming.”

She told Glamour in 2012 that has dreams of “doing blue at some point.”
