Diana wore the dress, which features a black velvet bodice embroidered with stars, in the Italian city of Florence in April 1985, and in Vancouver, Canada in May 1986.

The dress, accompanied by a coordinating illustration, was sold in Juliens "Hollywood Legends" auction, culminating on Sunday. Among the items sold was a blush-pink chiffon blouse that was worn by Diana in her engagement portrait in 1981, fetching a price of $381,000, nearly four times its original estimate.

The black sheep knit sweater worn by Princess Diana became the most valuable sweater ever sold at auction, fetching a record-breaking $1.143 million in New York earlier this year. The quirky wool sweater adorned with sheep also set the record for the highest price paid for a garment worn by Diana, who wore it in 1981 while engaged to Prince Charles.
