Prince Harry surprised everyone by showing up at the Service Members of the Year Awards, wearing a subtle nod to his own military background.
In a video message played during the awards ceremony on Thursday, April 25, Harry, 39, greeted everyone and gave a special shoutout to those currently serving, who have served, and those who will continue to serve. He then had the privilege of presenting this year's Soldier of the Year Award to Sergeant First Class Elizabeth Marks. Harry first met Marks at the Invictus Games in Orlando in 2016, where he awarded her with four gold medals for her outstanding performance in swimming.
Harry was seen recording a message in front of his Montecito, California home. He was wearing a black suit with a burgundy tie, along with four military medals on his lapel to represent his time serving in the British Army.
During the speech, Harry chose not to mention the significance of his medals, instead choosing to focus on honoring Marks' accomplishments.
Harry praised Ellie for embodying courage, resilience, and determination within the service community. He emphasized that her strength goes beyond her swimming skills, as she has bravely faced and conquered every challenge in her path. Ellie has transformed her struggles into a driving force, leading with empathy and determination to show that the impossible is achievable.
Despite enduring injuries while serving as a medical assistant in Iraq, undergoing multiple surgeries, and facing setbacks that would have discouraged many, Ellie has persevered. She made history by becoming the first woman in the army’s elite athlete program and the program's first swimmer. Furthermore, she has used her journey of recovery to inspire and support others in their own mental and physical healing through sports. By sharing her story and achievements, Ellie ensures that others facing difficulties find hope and healing through the power of sports.

Harry's decision to wear his military medals on Thursday holds special significance. In 2020, he lost his honorary titles when he and Meghan Markle stepped down from their roles as senior working royals. This meant Harry was unable to wear his ceremonial uniform at official royal events, such as Queen Elizabeth II's state funeral and King Charles III's coronation. However, Charles did permit Harry to wear the official garb for a special vigil at the queen's casket in September 2022.
Despite these challenges, Harry has remained committed to supporting fellow veterans through his involvement with the Invictus Games.
"Through the Invictus community, Ellie has coached many individuals from Ukraine and Colombia who are in great need, always keeping in mind the challenges at the beginning of their healing journey," he mentioned on Thursday. "Ellie, you truly embody the spirit of Invictus through your selfless service. You understand that sports not only saves lives but also transforms them for the better. By finding your own healing path, you have also supported numerous brothers and sisters in their journey to recovery. Your dedication serves as a source of inspiration, providing hope and setting a powerful example for others to follow. I am honored to have you as a friend and I cannot thank you enough for simply being yourself."
Harry closed by saying, "To all the service members present here tonight, whether past or present, please know that both your community and the international community appreciate all the sacrifices you have made."
