Addison, one of the finest new non-playable characters (NPCs) in Tears of the Kingdom, is adored by players. This endearing figure can be found throughout Hyrule, forever stuck holding a sign to promote his personal deity, President Hudson (who himself faces challenges in Tarrey Town), as he struggles to comprehend how signs function. Surprisingly, the game features numerous sign-related events, with over 70 instances where Link can assist Addison, a fact that many players may not realize.
Now, let's delve into the precise ways in which players can aid Addison in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. We will also explore some valuable tips discovered by players, and the subtle differences in each sign Addison holds in various locations.
Updated October 31st, 2023 by Jacob Buchalter: The task of assisting Addison in fixing his poorly-placed signs in Tears of the Kingdom is not usually considered a highlight of the game. Nonetheless, while exploring Hyrule, it was often amusing to spot Addison in the distance, frantically trying to prop up a flawed sign, and then discovering nearby objects that could be used to support it. There are numerous strategies, tips, and rewards associated with this activity, so let's delve into some of the most notable ones.
How To Help Addison Out
Appearance | NPC Name | # of Signs |
---|---|---|
Addison | 81 |
While traversing the vast expanses of Hyrule's fields, deserts, and tundras, Link frequently encounters Addison in remote areas. Addison is occupied with the task of erecting a Hudson sign. Whenever Link locates Addison in these situations and extends a helping hand, Addison expresses gratitude by offering a range of rewards, including different types of food, items for one-time use, and occasionally, materials. Typically, Addison presents 1x Food, 1x Item, and sporadically, 1x Material as a token of appreciation.
To assist Addison, players can use the Ultrahand and nearby supplies or items (including Autobuild) to construct a support for his sign. The goal is to keep the sign from falling while Addison builds a proper stand. Once the construction is complete, players can interact with Addison and instruct him to 'Let Go'. The success of the construction determines whether the sign will remain standing or topple over. Hudson Construction Materials are usually available nearby for players to use in building a stable support for a few seconds.
Once Addison releases the sign and it remains upright, wait briefly to witness his surprised reaction. Then, engage in conversation with him again to witness his overwhelming surprise and joy. The screen will fade to black, signifying Addison's quick action in setting up the proper stand. Shortly after, Addison will reward Link with various minor rewards.
Sign Support Tips
As previously mentioned, each President Hudson sign that Addison possesses has its own unique reason for being unable to stand independently. Some signs are more unbalanced at the top and require additional support in that area. Others are designed to be placed on an incline so that they will topple perpendicularly to Addison rather than parallel. Additionally, many signs are simply basic without proper bases or poorly constructed supports, causing them to fall away from Addison as soon as he releases them.
Players should carefully examine the sign before constructing any supporting structures for Addison. There is no universal creation that can guarantee the stability of every sign permutation. It is important to inspect the base of the sign, the signboard itself (where Hudson is painted), and the back of the signboard.
To assist Addison, players can utilize Autobuild Creations, including the more dangerous variants, as well as Zonai Devices. It is advisable to make the most of these two tools.
The Zonai Stake is an incredibly useful item that ensures any support remains firmly in place, making it a convenient cheat for stabilizing structures.
To create a solid starting point, players often use a wooden board as a base to attach all other items. This helps in attaching the support to the ground effectively. The sign doesn't necessarily have to be erected completely upright, as long as it doesn't tilt excessively, it will meet Addison's requirements.
Link's creation does not require indefinite support for the sign, nor does it require long-lasting support.
If the support keeps the sign standing for a duration of 3-4 seconds, that is sufficient to make an impression and persuade Addison to promptly construct a permanent support.
For players utilizing Autobuild, a convenient method to complete these tasks is to find a construction configuration (no matter how unconventional) that appears to be effective for majority of the signs, and simply "save" it to their Favorites.
Rewards For Helping Addison
And finally, what is the actual incentive for Link to assist Addison numerous times besides pure goodwill? Well, Addison offers a range of rewards to the Hero of Hyrule after securing the sign. However, these rewards are relatively basic, as it would be impractical to distribute Diamonds for each sign. Typically, Addison grants Link some Rupees, a variety of Rice Ball, and an additional reward in the form of a Sleepover Ticket, Puffshroom, Bomb Flower, and so forth. Here is Addison's usual list of potential rewards:
Appearance | Name | Type | Description |
---|---|---|---|
Rupees | Currency | Typically gives about 20 Rupees. | |
Cooked Meal | Consumable | Almost always a different variant of Rice Balls (sweet, spicy, etc). | |
Puffshrooms | Item | Just a couple of Puffshrooms, Addison typically gives these or Bomb Flowers, but never both. | |
Bomb Flowers | Item | Bomb Flowers are incredibly helpful in Tears of the Kingdom, Addison typically gives these or Puffshrooms, but never both. | |
Sleepover Tickets | Key Item | A usable item that Link can take to any Stable in Hyrule and use to get a night's stay, free of charge. |
In the grand scheme of things, it may not be worth the effort to search for every President Hudson sign location unless the player has completed all other tasks and desires to fully complete Tears of the Kingdom. By helping Addison with each sign, players can unlock the Addison Fabric for their Paraglider, which not only serves a practical purpose but also has the added benefit of glowing in the dark. Perhaps, considering these factors, it is worth investing the time and effort.

As a long-time fan of the Zelda series, I was thrilled to hear about the upcoming release of Tears of the Kingdom. One of the things that I love most about the Zelda games is the rich lore and history that they offer. The inclusion of President Hudson signs in the game is a great way to pay homage to the series' past and to give players a chance to interact with one of the most iconic characters in the franchise.
I also appreciate the fact that the developers have taken the time to make each sign unique. This shows that they have put a lot of thought into the game and that they are passionate about creating a memorable experience for players. I can't wait to see all of the different signs that I can find in Tears of the Kingdom and to learn more about the history of President Hudson.
