Tony Hawk recently revealed that Activision has decided not to move forward with plans to remake Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4. This decision came after the success of the Vicarious Visions release of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2, which became the fastest-selling game in the franchise upon its launch in late 2020. Selling over a million copies in just two weeks and receiving critical acclaim, the remastered release included both the original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and its sequel, featuring 4K updates and most of the licensed music from the original games. While fans hoped for remakes of the next two games in the series, Activision had different plans for Vicarious Visions, leading to the change in direction.
The success of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 hinted at a natural progression for the franchise—an anticipated remaster collection of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4. This notion was further reinforced when Tony Hawk himself confirmed Activision's plans during a Twitch stream. However, the merger of developer Vicarious Visions into Blizzard caused a shift in direction, and sadly, the plans for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 remaster collection gradually dissipated.
After parting ways with Vicarious Visions for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4, Activision approached another developer for the project. However, they were not satisfied with the proposed ideas for future Tony Hawk's games, leading to the project being paused. According to Hawk, Activision lacked the same level of trust they had with Vicarious.
Vicarious Visions was merged with Blizzard in April 2022, after co-developing Diablo 2: Resurrected. It has now been renamed Blizzard Albany and is currently involved in the development of Diablo 4. Given the success of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2, it is likely that Activision valued Vicarious Visions' expertise in live service games and saw how it could benefit the development of Diablo 4.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 not happening may come as a disappointment, especially considering the positive reception of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2. However, Tony Hawk remains optimistic and mentions that they may figure things out once the dust settles, possibly referring to the completion of Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard. This suggests that Hawk hopes to advocate for the development of a new Tony Hawk's Pro Skater game.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 can currently be enjoyed on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
