Premier League VAR officials set for comeback after controversial Liverpool offside incident garners attention

VAR officials Darren England and Daniel Cook are set to make their return to Premier League action this weekend This comes after an unfortunate incident involving a disallowed goal by Luis Diaz due to a communication error between VAR and the on-field referee

VAR officials Darren England and Daniel Cook will resume their Premier League duties this weekend, after their mistake during last month's match between Tottenham and Liverpool. England and Cook served as the VAR and VAR assistant, respectively, when Liverpool forward Luis Diaz's goal was wrongly disallowed for being offside in Tottenham's 2-1 victory at home.

Both officials were replaced the next week, but England will serve as the fourth official for Brentford's home game against Burnley on Saturday, while Cook will resume his role as assistant referee for Sheffield United's match against Manchester United. A miscommunication between VAR England and referee Simon Hooper resulted in Diaz's goal being incorrectly disallowed on September 30. This incident was subsequently labeled by referees' chief Howard Webb as "a clear error".

Hooper has been appointed as the VAR for Newcastle's upcoming home game against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Michael Oliver will be the referee for United's match at Bramall Lane on Saturday. He made the decision not to give a red card to Manchester City's Mateo Kovacic for a tackle on Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard in the previous fixtures before the international break. Webb later acknowledged that the Croatian midfielder was lucky to remain on the field.
