AfriLabs has been leading the way in fostering a robust tech ecosystem throughout Africa for more than ten years. Leveraging the power of community networks, this organization has emerged as a powerful catalyst for driving innovation and technological progress on the continent.
The AfriLabs Gathering, an annual event held in Kigali, Rwanda, is a clear demonstration of its dedication to bringing together the African tech community. With over 400 innovation hubs in attendance, the gathering serves as a hub for young innovators, entrepreneurs, and startups in a wide range of industries.
The main objective of this year's gathering, which took place in October, was to enhance the tech ecosystem by harnessing the potential of innovation and digital technologies to create viable businesses, promote employment opportunities, and drive economic growth. This statement was made by Anna Ekeledo, the executive director of AfriLabs.
McKinsey and Company, a consultancy firm, forecasts that Africa's Digital Economy will soar to an astounding $712 billion by 2050, establishing it as a dominant global force.
According to Ekeledo, Africa's young and vibrant population is ready to harness the potential of technology and innovation to conquer obstacles and generate prospects across the continent.

Additionally, during the event, notable partnerships were forged, including a collaboration with Algeria Venture. This strategic alliance aims to facilitate cooperation opportunities and bolster the nurturing, financing, and visibility of startups throughout the African continent.
African startup Spiro is one the leading providers of electric two-wheelers on the continent, with around 10,000 vehicles currently on the road.

Ekeledo emphasized the chance for Algerian startups to engage with the broader African innovation ecosystem, as well as the potential for Afrilabs to extend its influence in North Africa.
Furthermore, the organization joined forces with Builder.ai to announce a collaboration aimed at offering technical assistance to African entrepreneurs and innovators. This partnership seeks to address the challenges faced by individuals with innovative solutions, who may lack the necessary resources and technical expertise to develop crucial applications and software.
From inception to impact
AfriLabs journey began in 2011 with just five members across four African countries. Today, it boasts 435 members across all 54 African nations.
Afrilabs, led by a trailblazing woman, tackles the gender gap in the tech industry, acknowledging the predominantly male-dominated African tech landscape. Their approach involves capacity building, policy advocacy, networking, innovative financing models, and a significant focus on promoting gender inclusion.
AfriLabs has set out a bold vision to expand its newly launched initiatives, AfriLabs Connect and RevUp Women, in collaboration with the Visa Foundation. Additionally, the organization is committed to empowering 50,000 women-led enterprises across Africa by offering comprehensive support including training, mentoring, and capacity-building sessions.
Currently in its pilot phase, this initiative is being implemented across 10 Innovation Hubs located in 10 cities, spanning five countries. It is expected to benefit a total of 500 women entrepreneurs.

"We plan to inject $10,000 into 10 women-owned businesses through the Catalytic Africa initiative and establish five mentoring networks that stretch across the continent," said Ekeledo.
"We have developed an extensive methodology that incorporates effective techniques like peer-to-peer learning and mentorship from female coaches. These strategies perfectly align with AfriLabs' overarching inclusion strategy, guaranteeing that women entrepreneurs benefit from a support system specifically tailored to their unique requirements," she emphasized.
An innovative funding model
Ekeledo states that the Catalytic Africa Programme, a groundbreaking funding model created by Afrilabs in collaboration with the African Business Angel Network, was introduced three years ago. The initiative harnesses funds from various partners and adds them to a central pool, functioning as a matching or co-investment fund. Its purpose is to encourage investment in promising startups affiliated with AfriLabs.
"In this model, we establish a connection between our network's innovators, who are the intrapreneurs, and the investors within a bank. We also facilitate the matching of funds once an investment is made, and provide continued support thereafter. Our goal is to build a comprehensive ecosystem that fosters prosperity and wealth for all parties involved - both the innovators and our partners," stated Ekeledo.
Beyond networking, Afrilabs has made a significant impact by influencing policy changes and creating a favorable environment for startups.

Ekeledo stated during the Rwanda gathering that the success stories arising from the hubs are clear evidence of the multiplier effect. Startups backed by AfriLabs have not only obtained funding but have also generated hundreds of job opportunities, thus contributing to the economic growth of Africa.
Afrilabs provides crucial support to innovation hubs, which play a vital role in fostering the continent's entrepreneurship ecosystem. Oswald Osaretin Guobadia, a digital evangelist and managing partner at DigitA, highlights the profound impact of Afrilabs.
During his interview with CNN, he expressed, "The true extent of Afrilabs' influence on innovation hubs throughout Africa became clear to me when I attended their annual gathering in Abuja in 2021.
"What's truly remarkable about Afrilabs is their dedication to supporting those who support innovation. They serve as a crucial backbone for the hubs that offer a platform for budding entrepreneurs," he further explained.
Afrilabs has actively influenced policy changes and has been a key player in the creation of "startup acts" that encourage innovation-friendly regulations to emerge.
According to Guobadia, their involvement in the Nigeria Startup Act and the ongoing Nigeria Startup Act State Adoption program demonstrates their dedication to driving discussions and making a real impact.
The Nigeria StartUp Act (NSA) recognized Afrilabs as a vital builder of the innovation hub community. Their contribution to the development of the Act was extremely valuable.
He also stated that they will have a crucial role in the Nigeria Startup Act State Adoption program, leveraging their extensive network of Nigerian members in hubs to facilitate discussions across states.
