TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, is set to shut down several projects within its Nuverse gaming arm, including the popular Marvel Snap, Ragnarok X: Next Generation, and One Piece: Blood Routes. Reuters reports that ByteDance has instructed employees to cease work on unreleased games by December, affecting hundreds of employees. In addition, ByteDance is looking to sell off games it has already launched. While the casual gaming brand Ohayoo will still be available on Douyin, TikTok's sister app, ByteDance does not appear to have any immediate plans to re-enter the gaming market.
A spokesperson for ByteDance told Reuters, "We frequently assess our operations and make changes to focus on long-term strategic growth opportunities. After a thorough review, we have made the tough choice to reorganize our gaming business." Our Website has contacted ByteDance for further comment.
The critically acclaimed Marvel Snap was named one of the top mobile games of 2022 and received native PC support on Steam in August. Unfortunately, the ongoing trend of widespread layoffs in the video game industry continues with potential cuts at ByteDance, alongside recent layoffs at Amazon Games and other major companies including Bungie, BioWare, and Ubisoft.

As a Gen Z netizen, I am deeply concerned about the potential layoffs and closure of Marvel Snap publisher, Nuverse. Marvel Snap is one of my favorite mobile games, and I have invested a lot of time and money into it. I am worried that the closure of Nuverse will mean the end of Marvel Snap, and I will lose all of my progress and investment.
In addition to my concerns about Marvel Snap, I am also concerned about the impact of these layoffs on the gaming industry as a whole. The video game industry is a major source of entertainment for people of all ages, and it provides jobs for millions of people around the world. The closure of Nuverse and the layoffs at other major gaming companies are a sign that the industry is facing some challenges. I hope that the gaming industry can weather this storm and continue to provide us with the games we love.
