It’s no longer just a Barbie world — Mattel’s Polly Pocket toy is now getting the live-action blockbuster treatment.

Following the lucrative release of Barbie's 2023 movie, which grossed $162 million in its opening weekend, the buzz surrounding the upcoming Polly Pocket film has intensified. Although the film was initially announced in the summer of 2021, it has gained significant attention recently.

Expressing her enthusiasm, Robbie Brenner spoke highly of Lily Collins and Lena Dunham, who will be starring and directing the project, respectively. In an interview with Variety in July 2023, Brenner stated, "First of all, they are two of my favorite ladies ever. It has been an incredible collaboration. Lena is exceptionally collaborative and actively seeks feedback. She is truly remarkable."

The movie revolves around the endearing bond between a young girl and a miniature woman, forging a heartwarming friendship. Serving as the very first live-action adaptation of Polly Pocket, the film draws inspiration from the beloved '90s version of the toy. Throughout its evolution since its inception in the 1980s, Polly Pocket's size has undergone changes, originally debuting as a tiny doll measuring only about an inch in height, delicately stored in charming carriers. Interestingly enough, the current catchphrase "Tiny But Mighty" still perfectly captures the essence of Polly Pocket today.

Dunham, who is both writing and directing the project, expressed her excitement about the opportunity in June 2021. "Polly Pocket provided me with countless hours of childhood escapism," Dunham told Variety at the time. "Polly offered a miniature world of magic and independence for me to create stories, so it's incredibly poetic to now be exploring these same themes as a director, working alongside the brilliant Lily Collins, Robbie Brenner, Mattel, and MGM. I'm absolutely thrilled to use my love for this iconic franchise and my firm belief that young women deserve intelligent and playful movies that resonate with them, devoid of condescension."

In June 2021, Collins officially confirmed that she would be taking on the role of Polly Pocket. Expressing her excitement on Instagram, she wrote, "I have some big news for all the Polly Pocket fans out there. As someone who was completely obsessed with Polly Pockets as a child, I cannot contain my joy in announcing my involvement in this project! It's a dream come true." Alongside her announcement, Collins shared a photoshopped image of herself inside a Polly Pocket holder, giving fans a glimpse of the vibrant world they can expect. She eagerly added, "I am beyond thrilled to immerse myself in this delightful pastel universe. Stay tuned for more Polly Pocket adventures!"

In October 2022, Dunham revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that she was in the final stages of completing the second draft for the film. She expressed excitement about exploring the concept of a small individual navigating a vast world, highlighting the amusing aspects. Subsequently, Dunham hinted that Collins' character would portray a diminutive size, comparable to the original '90s rendition of Polly Pocket. However, she acknowledged the need for slight adjustments in size due to safety precautions, referencing potential choking hazards. Nonetheless, Dunham emphasized her focus on capturing the essence of the miniature scale reminiscent of the '90s era.

Brenner confirmed to Variety in July 2023 that there is a completed script, which she called “great.”

Collins has been appointed as a producer for the live-action film, joining forces with Brenner and Kevin McKeon from the Mattel Films team. Representing the project's studio, MGM, Sandino Moya-Smith and Winnie Carrillo will also serve as producers, and Liz Watson and Michael P. Cohen have been appointed as executive producers.
