As the release of Pikmin 4 draws near, Nintendo has unveiled another exciting feature to keep fans eagerly anticipating its arrival. Despite already showcasing several new additions, it seems the developers have kept some surprises up their sleeves. Pikmin 4 marks the fourth main entry in the franchise, and sixth overall, of one of Nintendo's more unique series. Originally launching on the GameCube in 2001, the game was met with both critical and commercial success, leading to a sequel just three years later. With subsequent re-releases on the Wii and appearances in popular Nintendo titles, such as Nintendo Land and Super Smash Bros., the franchise has continued to expand its audience.
In a new trailer unveiled on Nintendo's official YouTube channel, fans get a glimpse of the latest addition to Pikmin 4: character customization. Against a backdrop of shadow art on a tan background, a playful narrator summarizes the game's basic premise, where players lead a rescue team that crash-lands on an uncharted planet to save Captain Olimar, who is also stranded. This time around, players can customize their avatar's skin and hair color, facial structure, hairstyle, head shape, body type, and even the color of their spacesuit. With three other main protagonists to choose from and mandatory swapping, Pikmin 4 is shaping up to be a game full of endless possibilities.
Nintendo has always been a vocal supporter of player representation and has actively incorporated custom avatar features into its games since the early days of the NES. The addition of this feature to the Pikmin series, which has always been about exploration, opens up a whole new world of possibilities for players to put their personal touch on the game.
With four main characters, relaxed restrictions on nighttime gameplay, the introduction of Oatchi for enhanced exploration, and a total of eight types of Pikmin to use, Pikmin 4 seems to be the most expansive installment yet. Fans are eagerly anticipating the possibilities that come with this long-awaited sequel and are excited to see what kind of gameplay experiences they can create come July 21, 2023, when the game is set to release on the Nintendo Switch.
