Scheffler was charged with several offenses, including felony assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.
Earlier this month, Scheffler was arrested for attempting to enter the Valhalla Golf Club parking lot for the PGA Championship. The incident occurred after a pedestrian was hit and killed by a shuttle bus outside Valhalla, causing traffic to be rerouted.
Detective Gillis tried to stop Scheffler and give instructions, according to a police report. However, Scheffler refused to follow the instructions and instead accelerated forward, dragging Detective Gillis to the ground.
It was later confirmed that Scheffler had been detained by the police. The Louisville Metro Police Department stated that during an incident where an officer was directing traffic, a motorist tried to enter a restricted area, leading to the driver's arrest. The department also mentioned that they are currently conducting a thorough investigation and appreciate the cooperation of all parties involved.
Major Jason Logsdon informed ESPN that Scheffler was released without bail and returned to Valhalla less than an hour before his tee time.
In a statement through X, Scheffler addressed the incident. He explained, "This morning, I was following the instructions given by the police officers. The situation was very chaotic, especially after the tragic accident that had occurred earlier. There was a misunderstanding about what I was supposed to do. I never meant to ignore any instructions. I hope to set this aside and focus on golf today."
He added that everyone participating in the tournament sends their heartfelt condolences to the family of the man who tragically passed away in the morning accident. It really makes us reflect on what's truly important.
