Scottie Scheffler secured his second Masters title in an impressive manner on Sunday, solidifying his position as the dominant force in men's golf. The world No.1 displayed unwavering composure at Augusta National, overcoming challenges from various competitors to claim victory by a four-shot margin over Sweden's Ludvig Åberg. This win adds to his previous triumph in 2022.
Scheffler was the favorite going into the 88th edition of the tournament. He lived up to expectations by winning with a closing four-under 68, bringing his total score to 11-under. This victory marked his third win in just over a month and earned him a $3.6 million share of the $20 million prize purse, a Masters record.
Despite challenging winds that caused many top players to struggle throughout the week, Scheffler remained unfazed. It seemed like the only thing that could potentially stop him from winning another green jacket was the imminent arrival of his first child.
The Texan had promised to leave the tournament if his wife Meredith went into labor soon, as their baby was due in a few weeks.
When asked by Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley if he had a message for his wife, Scheffler replied, "I'm coming home. I'll be home as quick as I can. I love you."
I'm feeling so emotional right now here in Butler Cabin. This moment means so much to both of us. Winning this tournament again is indescribable. And I can't even begin to imagine what it will be like to become a father for the first time.
I can't wait to go home and celebrate with Meredith. It's been tough being away from her this whole week.
Scheffler's recent victory at the Masters marks his ninth PGA Tour title and his third win in the last four tournaments. At just 27 years old, he joins a prestigious group of players who have achieved multiple Masters wins, including legends like Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, and Tiger Woods. Speaking of Woods, he finished 60th in this tournament after completing his 100th round at the major.
Woods, a five-time Masters champion, faced doubts about his ability to navigate the hilly Augusta terrain. Despite making the cut for a record-breaking 26th consecutive time, he struggled over the weekend.
In his third competitive start since last year's tournament, the 48-year-old opened with rounds of 73 and 72. However, he shot an 82 – his worst-ever round at the Masters – followed by a 77 to finish 16-over par, placing last among those who made the cut.
