Pro Golfer Scottie Scheffler Reportedly Detained by Police Officers Before PGA Championship 2
In this image, we see Scottie Scheffler from the United States taking his second shot to score an eagle on the first hole at the 2024 PGA Championship held at Valhalla Golf Club on May 16, 2024, in Louisville, Kentucky. The moment captured is a testament to his skill and precision in the game.
Top golfer Scottie Scheffler was taken into custody just hours before round two of the PGA Championship on Friday, May 17. According to the Louisville Metropolitan Department of Corrections’ inmate database, Scheffler, 27, was booked at 7:28 a.m. on Friday. He faces charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals as reported by local outlet WAVE 3.
Scheffler, who finished the first round of the tournament four strokes under par, was stopped by Louisville Metro Police officers as he tried to drive into the Valhalla Golf Club parking lot for the tournament. Xander Schauffele is currently at the top of the leaderboard at -9, as reported by ESPN on Friday. The outlet's sports reporter Jeff Darlington witnessed the incident, stating that Scheffler was trying to drive his car around a crash scene. Despite a police officer telling Scheffler to stop, the athlete allegedly continued on for 10 or 20 yards.
According to Darlington, the police officer then grabbed at Scheffler's arm, attempting to pull him out of the car. Eventually, Scheffler opened the door, and the officer pulled him out, pushed him against the car, and immediately placed him in handcuffs. Darlington mentioned that Scheffler looked stunned and asked for help as he was being placed in the back of the police car in handcuffs. The athlete seemed to be confused and unaware of what was happening, as the situation unfolded quickly, aggressively, and unexpectedly.
Earlier this Friday morning, a tragic incident occurred outside Valhalla, the venue for the PGA Championship. A pedestrian was hit and sadly lost their life, leading to traffic being redirected by LMPD. In response to the situation, the PGA decided to postpone the start of Round 2 of the tournament by one hour.

ESPN reported that Scheffler was driving until a police officer intervened by attaching himself to the side of the car. When Scheffler rolled down his window to speak to the officer, the law enforcement official seemed to reach inside the car to remove Scheffler. Subsequently, Scheffler was pressed against his car, handcuffed, and escorted to a nearby station.
Scheffler, who was reported missing by WAVE 3, has been found and is on his way back to the grounds. He was scheduled to tee off at 10:03 am.
The athlete has not spoken publicly about what happened. A PGA spokesperson told CNN, "We will share any new information with you as the situation develops."
Scheffler is currently the No. 3 ranked golfer in the PGA, recently winning the 2024 Masters in April for a second time.

After his victory, Scheffler expressed his feelings during a press conference, saying, "It's hard to describe how meaningful this moment is to me. The journey has been long, and to be here now, wearing this jacket once again and being able to bring it home, is truly extraordinary."
Scottie and wife Meredith Scheffler welcomed their first baby, son Bennett, just weeks after Scottie's Masters win.
Earlier this month, Scottie shared the first photo of their newborn on Instagram, expressing his love for their little one.
"Welcome to the world, little one. Your mom and dad love you so much," he gushed.
Meredith decided not to participate in the Masters golf tournament due to her pregnancy.
On the green, Scottie expressed how much he missed having her there as his biggest supporter. He mentioned that if she went into preterm labor during the tournament, he would leave early. However, he also shared that they are both excited about this new chapter in their lives. Scottie added that he is grateful that Meredith is still at home and feeling well.
Editor's P/S:
The arrest of Scottie Scheffler, one of the world's top golfers, on charges of assaulting a police officer and other offenses has sent shockwaves through the golfing community. While the details of the incident are still emerging, it is deeply concerning to hear that Scheffler, a respected athlete known for his sportsmanship and good character, has been accused of such serious crimes. It is important to allow the legal process to unfold and avoid rushing to judgment, but this incident raises questions about the pressures and challenges faced by professional athletes, particularly when they are in the midst of high-stakes competitions.
It is also worth noting that the incident occurred during the PGA Championship, one of the most prestigious events in golf. The arrest of a player during such a major tournament not only tarnishes the reputation of the player but also casts a shadow over the event itself. While the PGA has stated that it will provide updates as the situation develops, it is crucial for the organization to handle the matter with transparency and ensure that any appropriate actions are taken. The integrity of the game and the safety of all involved are paramount, and any incident that threatens these values must be addressed swiftly and decisively.
