Payday 3 was released in September and encountered significant server problems that affected its performance. The extent of the impact on the game is not fully understood. In their latest earnings report, publisher Starbreeze stated that the game surpassed their initial sales expectations and has already generated enough revenue to cover its costs. This achievement is somewhat expected, considering Payday 3 was fully financed before its launch through a €50 million agreement with Koch Media.
Embracer, the owner of Koch Media, expressed disappointment in Payday 3's initial sales performance. Lars Wingefors, CEO of Embracer, stated during an earnings briefing that Payday 3's sales were "slightly below our expectations," as reported by VGC.
Neither Embracer nor Starbreeze have disclosed their specific sales projections for Payday 3. However, Starbreeze announced that it managed to recoup its development expenses for the game on September 30, a mere nine days after its release on September 21.
Payday 3 was not only sold independently but also released on Xbox Game Pass, expanding its potential commercial audience beyond unit-sales numbers.
Addressing the issues with Payday 3, Starbreeze admitted that the game's servers were unable to cope, which resulted in lower sales. Nevertheless, Starbreeze remains confident that their future plans will boost sales gradually.
"I have often expressed the belief that 'You are only as good as your next game,' and the events of September and October have provided ample reason for thorough analysis, investigation, and corrective measures," stated Tobias Sjogren, Starbreeze's representative. "Our team's primary focus remains on developing Payday 3 in accordance with our established plan while also addressing the temporary decline in confidence resulting from its initial release."
Looking to the future, Sjogren revealed that Starbreeze possesses a clear and defined vision for the ongoing development of Payday 3 through its live-service approach. Payday 3 has now progressed from its initial launch phase into a dynamic live-service phase, allowing the team to implement new features, enhancements, and additional content.
Payday 2 currently has more players on Steam than Payday 3, indicating that Payday 3's player numbers are not as strong.
Payday 3 is set to receive two new free heists this month, along with future patches that will introduce new first-person animations, weapons, skins, and other improvements. In addition, Starbreeze is working on four paid expansions for Payday 3, with the company mentioning that this is just a portion of the post-launch content planned for the game.
The game review for Payday 3 on our website gave it a 6/10 rating. Critic Alessandro Barbosa commented, "Payday 3 presents exciting new challenges and gratifying stealth missions that will captivate you for hours."
Editor's P/S
As a Gen Z fan, I am excited about the release of Payday 3 and its potential to build upon the success of its predecessors. The game's fast-paced, cooperative gameplay and the ability to customize characters and weapons have always been a thrilling experience for me. However, the server issues that plagued the game's launch were disappointing and affected my initial enjoyment. Despite these challenges, I appreciate Starbreeze's commitment to addressing these issues and their transparency in communicating with the community.
The news that Payday 3 has already surpassed its development costs in just nine days is impressive and a testament to the game's popularity and anticipation among fans. The game's inclusion on Xbox Game Pass has also expanded its potential audience, making it more accessible to a broader range of players. I believe that with continued support and updates, Payday 3 has the potential to become a long-term success and a staple in the cooperative shooter genre.
