Creator David Jenkins discusses the breakdown of Stede and Blackbeard's romantic relationship in season 2 of Our Flag Means Death. Premiering in March 2022, the period romantic comedy is set in the early 18th century and follows Stede Bonnet, a gentleman pirate who undergoes a midlife crisis and decides to become a fierce buccaneer. However, his transition to piracy does not go smoothly, and he eventually crosses paths with the infamous Captain Blackbeard. The first season of the show received acclaim for its LGBTQ representation.

In an interview with TVInsider, Jenkins talks about the rekindling of Stede and Blackbeard's relationship in season 2 after facing a major setback in season 1. He describes the conversation between the two characters, where Stede tries to apologize and make amends for breaking Blackbeard's trust, as highly relatable. Jenkins also praises Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi, who portray Stede and Blackbeard respectively, noting their ability to balance drama and comedy in their performances. I think we’ve all been that person on that side of the relationship. It's like, "Hey, I apologize for my strange behavior." And I find it relatable to have those moments with someone in a pirate world where they’re essentially dressed up for Halloween, but still having a conversation we've all had in a relationship. What I adore is when he expresses, "I enjoy being close to you, and breathing the same air as you." However, he quickly adds, "Don't tell me you love me. You don't have the right to say that to me." It feels reminiscent of a scene from a Noah Baumbach film. It has a natural quality to it. We've all had that argument and experienced that moment of reconciling with the person we upset, allowing us back into their lives. These moments between the characters in a fantasy world, especially with Rhys and Taika, have a certain depth, with the ability for something silly to happen right after. For me, the essence lies in whether these individuals will be able to navigate a mature relationship. Mary is correct: they behave like 14-year-old boys and are unaware of the challenges involved in being in a relationship.

Our Flag Means Death has garnered a great deal of acclaim and emerged as one of HBO Max's highest-rated series. With a current 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the show's initial season captivated viewers through its offbeat and amusing brand of humor, simultaneously cringe-worthy and hilarious. Moreover, the show's standout aspect lies in its notable LGBTQ+ representation, exemplified by three queer relationships, most notably that of Stede and Blackbeard.

The duo's relationship starts off on a rocky note when Stede outsmarts Blackbeard's crew members on an island in episode 2, "A Damned Man." However, they quickly become friends in the next episode after discovering they both share a mutual midlife crisis. From there, their bond gradually develops, evolving from friendship to a romantic relationship.

The portrayal of Stede and Blackbeard's relationship in Our Flag Means Death has garnered significant acclaim. The showrunners skillfully avoided the common trope of queerbaiting by revealing the true nature of their relationship early on. In season 2, the show continues to captivate viewers for various reasons, but the endearing relationship between Stede and Blackbeard, although currently uncertain, stands out as one of the main factors that has catapulted the show to become a highly sought-after series. It will be intriguing to see if their relationship fully reignites in the season finale.
