Overwatch 2 fans are disappointed with the lack of customization options for the new Mythic skin, Onryo Hanzo, which only has five different customization options.
Executive producer Jared Neuss addressed the criticism by emphasizing Onryo Hanzo's focus on distinguishing visual effects rather than altering the character model. He also clarified that not all Mythic skins will offer the same number of choices. Certain fans speculate that Overwatch 2 may have faced time constraints that hindered the completion of the skin, which raises concerns about the team's ability to consistently release a Mythic skin every season. Furthermore, fans express disappointment over the inclusion of locked Diablo 4 skins in a $40 bundle, sparking further criticism.
Fans of Overwatch 2 are expressing their disappointment with the limited customization options available for Onryo Hanzo, the new Mythic skin introduced in Season 7: Rise of Darkness. While many players find the skin impressive, the fact that there are significantly fewer ways to personalize it has left numerous Overwatch 2 fans feeling unsatisfied.
Mythic skins are a fresh addition to the cosmetic lineup in Overwatch 2's seasonal content. With each season, a new Mythic skin is introduced, featuring distinctive voicelines and effects, and offering a variety of customization options. These options span from unique facial expressions and weaponry to diverse attire choices and color palettes.
However, Season 7's Mythic skin has deviated from this pattern, disappointing many players. Unlike its predecessors, Onryo Hanzo offers only five customization options. Players can select from two different bows and three skin colors, but they are not able to change the actual model or outfit like they could in previous seasons. In comparison to other Mythic skins, which provide between 8 and 11 options, the customizations for Onryo Hanzo are significantly limited.
Jared Neuss, the executive producer of Overwatch 2, addressed the criticisms that Onryo Hanzo has received from fans on his personal Twitter account. He explained that every skin has different priorities, with some emphasizing different models and others focusing more on visual effects (VFX). According to Neuss, Onryo Hanzo falls into the latter category, featuring unique voice lines, ability effects, and voice modulation. He also clarified that the reduced number of customization options does not necessarily set a precedent for future Mythic skins in Overwatch 2.
However, there are many skeptical Overwatch 2 fans. While the unique and stylish effects used for Onryo Hanzo's ultimate and other abilities are impressive, players have pointed out that other skins, like Cyber Demon Genji and Amaterasu Kiriko, also have special visual effects. These fans are questioning whether the developers ran out of time to complete the skin and suggesting that the commitment to a Mythic skin every season should be reconsidered if Overwatch 2 cannot provide equivalent options for each one.
Regrettably, Onryo Hanzo is not the only Overwatch 2 skin facing criticism from fans currently. In Season 7, numerous Diablo 4 skins were introduced for Overwatch 2, but many of the highly desired cosmetics are only available in a $40 bundle. Nonetheless, Season 7 also brought some positive updates to the game, including a new map and a frighteningly thematic Battle Pass, so Overwatch 2 has managed to achieve some victories to counterbalance these shortcomings.
Overwatch 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
