Skydance's upcoming Marvel game featuring Captain America and Black Panther is generating a lot of buzz due to its authentic setting and cast, as well as the inclusion of four playable protagonists. However, details about the game are scarce, leaving fans to speculate about how each character will play and what sets them apart from one another. Since the game is set during WW2, it's safe to assume that Captain America's playstyle will be more pragmatic and less flashy than in modern times. It will be interesting to see how the game developers handle his iconic vibranium shield, and whether or not Steve Rogers will have full control over it from the start. To get an idea of what to expect, Firaxis' recent Marvel's Midnight Suns game could serve as a useful reference point for Captain America's potential abilities and attributes.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ Captain America Makes the Most of a Block Meter
Captain America's tactical gameplay in Marvel's Midnight Suns is centered around negating a significant amount of damage with his Block ability, which is reinforced by his skill and heroic cards. This strategy is shared by many other characters, such as Captain Marvel, who also employ Block in their own cards. When used in conjunction with other characters on the battlefield, it can be incredibly advantageous. Given that Captain America carries an almost indestructible shield, it makes sense that Block is a key aspect of his gameplay. As a result, he can act as a tank, drawing enemy attention away from his teammates while simultaneously dealing out substantial damage. Additionally, as a leader archetype, Captain America is proficient in rallying the team.
Skydance’s Captain America Needs Some Sort of Block or Posture Meter
Captain America is an ideal teammate to support other characters on the team that may be more vulnerable to damage. In Skydance's Marvel game, the presence of panicked or frightened infantry soldiers around the player is certain. Therefore, it would be beneficial to have this version of Captain America provide the same type of assistance.
To prevent Captain America from having an unfair advantage in deflecting gunfire, Skydance could implement a unique mechanic for him - a Block meter. This would limit his ability to deflect attacks indefinitely and balance the game. However, the vibranium shield could still provide superior defense against attacks that regular armor would not be able to withstand.
It would be intriguing to observe how playing as Captain America would differ from playing as Gabriel Jones, particularly with the introduction of a Block or Posture meter. This could add a unique element to Captain America's gameplay, as relying too heavily on his shield could result in a brief stun if the meter were to break. Additionally, given Captain America's history of using firearms, it would be exciting to witness him defending himself with the shield while simultaneously firing at his Hydra enemies. If Captain America has the ability to throw the shield, it would make sense for him to temporarily lose his Block meter and be more susceptible to damage while it is out of his possession. Nonetheless, as a super soldier, he should be able to withstand more damage than Gabriel in Skydance's Marvel game.
