At a recent naturalization ceremony, former First Lady Melania Trump delivered words of encouragement to approximately 24 individuals being sworn in as some of America’s newest citizens. The following day, her husband, former President Donald Trump, was making derogatory comments about immigrants from the same countries.

Melania made her remarks during a swearing-in ceremony for new Americans on Friday at the National Archives, a government agency that her husband had criticized numerous times after leaving office for attempting to retrieve classified documents that he is accused of wrongly taking from the White House.

Melania, a native of Slovenia, was personally invited to the event by the Archivist of the United States, Colleen Shogan, who was appointed by Biden. She spoke to the attendees about her own difficulties in becoming a naturalized American.

"Going through the immigration process made me realize the difficult realities that people, like you, face when trying to become US citizens," Melania shared.

It makes one ponder how much more difficult her challenge would have been if the front-running GOP candidate for president had been making claims that newcomers to America were "poisoning the blood of our country." This is exactly what Donald Trump stated in October and reiterated at a rally in New Hampshire on Saturday.

Miriam, an Ecuadorian mother, and her four-year-old daughter Aylin, stand at a makeshift camp between the U.S. and Mexico, awaiting volunteer assistance after a 15-day journey from Ecuador. They, along with many others, have been waiting for days in limbo for a chance to plead for asylum. Local volunteer groups are providing essential items to migrants stuck in this open-air camp. The U.S. government's Covid-era Title 42 policy, which allowed for the quick expulsion of irregular migrants entering the country, expired on May 11.

The situation at the southern border has become critical and urgent. When Trump initially made this statement, many experts pointed out its troubling similarities to Adolf Hitler's "Mein Kampf" and the views of modern white supremacists. During a rally on Saturday, the former president cautioned about the perceived threat to the US posed by a large number of immigrants from various parts of the world, including Africa and Asia.

The head of the Anti-Defamation League expressed concern about Trump's comment, warning that "suggesting that immigrants are polluting our country echoes nativist rhetoric and could incite actual danger and violence." The group also pointed out that "We have seen this dangerous rhetoric spark real violence in places like Pittsburgh and El Paso," referring to two locations where shooters used the threat of immigrants as a reason for their deadly attacks.

But Melania refrained from addressing her husband's xenophobic remarks and his promise, if re-elected in 2024, to tighten the process for seeking asylum in the US. He has also committed to ending birthright citizenship, which grants citizenship to those born on US soil, and expressed his intention to reinstate the travel ban on individuals from predominantly Muslim countries.

Recent news publications have claimed that former President Donald Trump is gaining support from Black voters. However, author and radio host Clay Cane remains skeptical of these reports.

The former First Lady also encouraged new Americans to embrace their responsibilities as US citizens by actively participating in the democratic process and safeguarding our freedom. However, there was no mention of her husband's attempts to undermine democracy with his failed coup, for which he now faces multiple felony charges in both Georgia and federal court.

Melania speaking at the National Archives is hypocritical, as her husband ignored months of requests to return highly classified documents taken from the White House to Mar-a-Lago. This resulted in a criminal probe by the Department of Justice and 40 felony charges against the former president. Trump's public attacks on the National Archives, including false claims about being willing to return the documents, were in response to the agency's repeated requests that he ignored.

Melania has remained silent about the attacks by her husband, which led to an outpouring of threats and hostility towards the agency and its employees. Her former aide, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, revealed on CNN that as First Lady, Melania showed no interest in attending events to welcome new citizens, despite being an immigrant herself. Wolkoff criticized Melania's speech as "quite repulsive," dismissing it as a mere "publicity moment."

Despite this, Melania has spoken about political issues in the past. In May, during an appearance on Fox News, she expressed her support for her husband's 2024 presidential run, emphasizing their shared goal of restoring hope and leading America with love and strength.

Melania Trump, like many GOP officials, has chosen not to condemn her husband's reprehensible comments and appalling behavior. These new citizens deserve our praise for achieving their status, but Melania Trump does not.
