Vertical has announced the American release window for the upcoming action thriller film The Bricklayer, featuring Aaron Eckhart and Nina Dobrev. Although a specific release date has yet to be determined, the film, directed by Renny Harlin, will be simultaneously released in the United States in early 2024, according to Deadline. Its original intention was to debut earlier this year.
Based on the 2010 novel by former FBI agent Noah Boyd, The Bricklayer will tell the story of a renegade insurgent who blackmails the CIA by assassinating foreign journalists and framing the agency for it. As other countries turn against the United States, the CIA must entice Steve Vail (played by Eckhart), their most exceptional and rebellious operative, out of retirement. Vail, utilizing his diverse skills, is tasked with clearing the agency's reputation and must confront his troubled history while uncovering an international conspiracy. The film also features Clifton Collins Jr., Tim Blake Nelson, and Ilfenesh Hadera alongside Eckhart and Dobrev.

Harlin, known for his successful 1990s action films such as Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, and Deep Blue Sea, is returning to his roots with this new film. He is also set to direct a trilogy of sequel films in The Strangers horror universe, scheduled for release in 2024. With the upcoming release of The Bricklayer, Harlin is expected to have a busy year. Eckhart, who has experience in action films, having portrayed an American president in danger in Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen, as well as an alien-fighting U.S. soldier in Battle: Los Angeles, will take on a significant role in the film. One of his most memorable performances was playing the villainous Two-Face in 2008's The Dark Knight. Dobrev, known for her roles in the television series The Vampire Diaries, will also feature in the film.
Harlin directed The Bricklayer, which was written by Hannah Weg and Matt Johnson. Produced by Gerard Butler for his G-Base banner, the film is brought to us by Millenium Media. Interestingly, Butler was initially intended to play Eckhart's character as far back as 2011 but was eventually replaced. The film is produced by a team that includes Jeffrey Greenstein, Yariv Lerner, Jonathan Yunger, Heidi Jo Markel, and Robert Van Norden.
