Former NFL player Sergio Brown is currently missing, while his mother was discovered deceased on Saturday in the vicinity of a creek in a Chicago suburb, as reported by the police.
In a news release, the Maywood Police Department stated that the family of Brown and his mother, Myrtle, notified them when they were unable to locate or communicate with either of them.
"Upon receiving the report, Maywood Police Officers took immediate action, launching a search for the missing individuals," stated the official press release.
Following an extensive search operation, authorities discovered the lifeless body of Myrtles in close proximity to a creek situated behind her residence, as stated by the department.
Myrtle, aged 73, was found to have died from the result of an assault, in accordance with records obtained by CNN affiliate WBBM, as established by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
Sergio Brown, aged 35, had previously played for Notre Dame before becoming an undrafted free agent with the New England Patriots in 2010. He enjoyed a seven-season career in the NFL, representing teams such as the Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Buffalo Bills.
The investigation is currently underway, and Maywood police are urging anyone with information to contact the anonymous tip line at 708-450-1787. Despite CNN's request for more details, Dennis Diaz, the lead investigator, did not provide a response.
CNN attempted to contact the relatives of Sergio and Myrtle Brown, however, they have not yet received a response. WBBM's video footage showcased police tape enclosing a residential street in the suburbs of Chicago as authorities arrived at the scene.
"Myrtle was an exceptional woman, and I pray that she has found solace in the divine presence," Carlos Cortez, the neighbor of Myrtle Brown, expressed to WBBM. "As I mentioned, I could never have anticipated this turn of events."
