Rumors about the next James Bond got all mixed up when the British tabloid "The Sun" claimed that 33-year-old British actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson had been offered the role of 007.
According to The Sun, an unnamed source mentioned that "Bond is Aaron's job, if he wants it. The official offer has been made, and now they're just waiting for his response."
CNN has contacted Eon Productions and Taylor-Johnson's team to hear their thoughts on the matter.
After much anticipation, rumors about Taylor-Johnson potentially stepping into the iconic role of James Bond have surfaced. This speculation has been ongoing since Daniel Craig announced that "No Time to Die" would be his final appearance as 007 in 2021.
According to a source familiar with the situation, CNN confirms that Johnson has not been chosen to play Bond. Additionally, BBC News states that a "production insider" has denied the rumors about Taylor-Johnson's casting.
Taylor-Johnson, who is 33 years old, gained recognition as a mainstream actor with his role in the 2008 teen comedy “Angus, Thongs and the Perfect Snogging.” He further solidified his success with his breakthrough performance in the 2010 film “Kickass,” according to IMDB.
In 2017, he received a Golden Globe award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the 2016 neo-noir film “Nocturnal Animals,” directed by fashion designer Tom Ford.
Other actors who have been suggested for the role are British actor Henry Cavill and Irish actor Cillian Murphy, who recently won the Oscar for Best Actor.
Murphy received praise from former Bond actor Pierce Brosnan, who said, “Cillian would do a fantastic job as James Bond in His Majesty’s Secret Service,” during an interview with the BBC.
Idris Elba has been rumored for years to potentially be the first black James Bond. The actor has expressed feeling "super complimented" by these suggestions. He mentioned feeling flattered by the idea, although he also acknowledged that not everyone approved of him being considered for the role.
Elba shared his thoughts on the "Smartless" Podcast in 2023, expressing that those who opposed the idea made the situation distasteful and unappealing by turning it into a racial issue. He mentioned feeling targeted and overwhelmed by the negativity.
It remains uncertain when an official announcement will be made regarding the start of production for the next installment in the long-standing sixty-plus-year franchise.
Last year, James Bond film producer Michael G. Wilson, of Eon Productions told Deadline, “There will always be a Bond.”
