Young Sheldon is coming to an end, but the world of The Big Bang Theory is likely to live on at CBS.
The network is currently discussing plans to collaborate with executive producers Steve Holland, Steven Molaro and Chuck Lorre from Young Sheldon for a new multi-camera spinoff series. According to a source, the show will focus on characters Georgie Cooper and Mandy McAllister, portrayed by Montana Jordan and Emily Osment, and is expected to receive a direct-to-series order once deals are finalized. CBS and Warner Bros. Television have chosen not to provide comment at this time.
In November 2023, it was announced that the seventh season of Young Sheldon would be its last. The final season, consisting of 14 episodes, will premiere on Thursday, February 15, with the series finale set to air on Thursday, May 16.
Set in the late 1980s, the single-camera comedy follows the young and brilliant Sheldon Cooper, played by Iain Armitage, as he navigates life with his family in East Texas. Jordan, 20, portrays Sheldon’s big brother, Georgie, while Osment plays Georgie’s fiancée and the mother of his child.
Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, Raegan Revord, and Annie Potts are also part of the cast, with Jim Parsons, known for his role as adult Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory, serving as the narrator and executive producer.
The announcement that season 7 would be the show’s last came as a surprise to many fans. Young Sheldon has been a strong performer since its debut in 2017 and has consistently been the top network comedy since 2019, drawing in over 11 million viewers.
“As a prequel to one of the biggest comedies, Young Sheldon proved lightning can strike twice,” stated Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment, in a November 2023 announcement. “It set itself apart with a remarkable cast that felt like a family from the first moment we saw them on screen and brought characters to life with unique heartfelt stories that drew audiences in from the start.”
