What's New in January

Siempre Fui Yo: Segunda Temporada | Tráiler Oficial | Disney+

January is following a strong month when it comes to new content on Disney+. In December, the streamer added new holiday specials, television series, and original movies. It also featured musical specials, so there was something for everyone to stream. January is just as busy a month for the streamer as December with these new movies and TV shows coming to Disney+.

Highlights of the Month

THE LAST REPAIR SHOP - Official Trailer

January 3

Reality television is the theme of what’s being added to Disney+ on January 3. Most of the shows adding episodes to the streamer are going to be courtesy of National Geographic. They range from shows that depict working conditions the audience might not be familiar with to those examining unsolved puzzles in history. In addition to the many episodes of the different docuseries joining Disney+, however, there is also a batch of episodes for Alice’s Wonderland Bakery. The series is inspired by Alice in Wonderland but sees the titular character using magical recipes to make unique treats. It’s been a hit with Disney’s younger audience members.

For fans of the modern Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s plenty more Marvel content to enjoy that came before it. The X-Men movies, following the team of titular comic book characters, is one of the most beloved properties, though not all of the movies are a hit with critics. Though the screen rights for X-Men previously belonged to 20th Century Fox, Disney now owns FOX, which means the characters fall under the MCU umbrella. Disney has slowly been adding those older properties to their streaming service, like Sony’s Spider-Man movies, and now, X-Men. Starring Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Halle Berry as Storm, and Anna Paquin as Rogue, the movie helped to create the modern era of comic book adaptations.

The Incredible Pol Farm (Season 1, 14 episodes) Dr. Jan Pol has had a Nat Geo Wild series for years following his veterinary practice. This new show doesn’t focus on the veterinary practice, but instead, on three generations of the Pol family as they work to turn a large plot of land into a functioning farm. The idea for the Pol family is to create a home for animals after helping them with medical issues for so long. The series will premiere on Nat Geo Wild before it’s added to Disney+.

Marvel Studios' Echo (Season 1) Echo made her debut in the MCU in the Hawkeye series (also available on Disney+). The popular character gets a spin-off that will mark some departures for the MCU’s Disney+ shows. Echo will be rated TV-MA, which means the content will be closer in tone to the Netflix Marvel series that came before it, like Daredevil and Jessica Jones. All of the shows will be available to stream at once when Echo becomes available on Disney+, which is different than the weekly model the streamer has employed for most of its shows. It features the return of Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk as well as Alaqua Cox as the title character. Echo premieres at 9:00PM EST and will also be available to stream on Hulu until April 9.

Hamster & Gretel follows a young girl and her hamster who get superpowers. Kiya & the Kimoja Heroes is also a superhero series but centered on a young Black girl who uses a magical headband with her friends to help her community. Both shows feature young girls as heroes but tell very different stories.

Bluey (Season 3, 10 Episodes) Bluey has become one of the most popular modern children’s shows. New episodes of the series are added to Disney+ in batches after they’ve aired on television. This particular batch of episodes takes everyday family activities and turns them into adventures for kids to watch unfold. Some of those adventures include taking a family trip to the beach and making a fort in the house. The series aims to expand the imagination of children while also teaching them everyday lessons.

The Last Repair Shop (2023) While most of what is new to Disney+ in January 2024 is television episodes, The Last Repair Shop is not. From Searchlight Pictures, The Last Repair Shop is a short film about a very special place in California. The short spotlights a downtown Los Angeles warehouse and the craftspeople who volunteer their time there. Those craftspeople repair musical instruments for students, some of which date back nearly 100 years. The repair services are done for free to make sure that students have instruments available to use for class. In the short, the crew takes the audience into the repair facility, but also looks at some of the students who benefit from the repair services.

A multicolored beetle like bug on the title card for A Real Bugs Life

A Real Bug’s Life (miniseries) Disney and Pixar produced A Bug’s Life in 1998. 25 years later, kids still love the story of the bug circus and the ant princess saving the day. The story, however, saw many different types of insects working together which probably wouldn’t happen in reality. It did, however, inspire this Disney+ and National Geographic miniseries. The series examines nine different bug homes all over the world. Narrated by Awkwafina, A Real Bug’s Life allows people a non-fictional view of some of the very insects that have been in animated movies.

Me & Mickey shorts (Season 2, 17 episodes) Mickey Mouse Funhouse (Season 2, 4 episodes) Choir (miniseries) Assembled: The Making of Echo In addition to some animated episodes of television featuring Mickey Mouse being added to Disney+, Marvel’s Echo also gets a behind-the-scenes special as previous MCU additions to the streamer have. There’s also Choir, a six-part docuseries. The show centers on the Detroit Youth Choir as they prepare for a major performance and have to balance their choir practice with their everyday lives. Also airing throughout the month of January are new weekly episodes of Percy Jackson and the Olympians as well as BTS Monuments: Beyond the Star. The latter is a docuseries about the hugely successful K-pop group. Two episodes release each week until the docuseries is over. The former, however, is an adaptation of the Rick Riordan juvenile fiction series of the same name. The first season adapts the first book of the series and releases new episodes weekly. It was previously adapted as a movie starring Logan Lerman, which is also available to stream on Disney+. With so many new series on Disney+ in January, there is a huge variety of content for subscribers to watch.
