Serenity Forge has announced the release of a definitive edition of the beloved indie CRPG Lisa: The Painful on PC and the last two console generations. The game, made by one-man studio Dingaling Productions, has gained a dedicated following since the release of its predecessor, Lisa: The First, in 2012. Despite technically being a two-title series with a standalone expansion, the Lisa games have earned near-universal critical acclaim for their compelling atmosphere, writing, and Earthbound-inspired gameplay formula. The announcement of the definitive edition comes amidst controversy over Xbox's deletion of an achievement from one of Serenity Forge's latest games.
The definitive edition of Lisa has just been announced and it will include the base game along with its sole expansion. What's exciting about this new version is that it will feature updated HD graphics, UI tweaks, 20 extra songs, 12 localizations, additional quests, new enemies, and more story endings. Alongside all these new features, players can also expect quality-of-life improvements with support for PlayStation DualSense haptics, light bar, adaptive triggers, and speaker, as well as compatibility with Nintendo's HD Rumble technology built into the Switch controllers.
Gamers can also look forward to other notable features such as a 120fps mode for PC and current-gen consoles, a music player, and a new Painless difficulty setting designed to serve as a story mode. Additionally, Serenity Forge has confirmed that the re-release will include an option for pixel-perfect graphics scaling.
Gamers who already own Lisa: The Painful on Steam will receive the updated version of the game for free upon its release on July 18. Those who do not own the game can purchase Lisa: Definitive Edition from the Epic Games Store. Switch owners can already pre-order the game via the eShop, but Xbox and PlayStation gamers will have to wait for it to launch. The game will only be available in digital format, as the publisher did not mention any plans for a physical release. The announcement of Lisa: Definitive Edition follows the release of Serenity Forge's environmentally conscious farming sim Homestead Arcana on PC and consoles in April. The publisher currently has three other games in the works: space adventure Lifeless Moon, tactical RPG Arcadian Atlas, and horror gacha puzzler Roman Sands RE:Build.
Lisa: Definitive Edition launches July 18 on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
