Steven DeKnight, the showrunner of Netflix's Marvel Daredevil series, criticized the upcoming Disney+ show, calling it an "old Disney scam". He expressed concerns about how this new series may impact the financial rights of the creators of the original show. The Disney+ series, titled Daredevil: Born Again, focuses on the character Daredevil, portrayed by Charlie Cox, who is a lawyer named Matt Murdock during the day and a crimefighter at night. Vince D'Onofrio will also be returning to his role as Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin, the mob boss. DeKnight responded to a post on X made by Thomas, a grip who is a member of the IATSE union, which represents crew workers in the film, TV, and stage industry.
Thomas slammed the renaming of the series as "a scam," aimed at resetting guild contract terms to those of Season 1. DeKnight concurred on X, asserting, "It's a classic Disney scheme where they tweak the series name slightly to nullify contract obligations from previous seasons. This issue needs to be addressed by all industry guilds and unions and completely obliterated!"
DeKnight further stated, "Let me be clear, I'm eagerly anticipating the return of Charlie Cox and the incredible @VincentDonofrio reprising their iconic roles. However, asserting that this is a total reboot and avoiding paying the original creators is nothing short of corporate trickery, to put it mildly."
Not all individuals participating in the production appear to be in complete agreement. In an interview with NME last year, Charlie Cox, the actor portraying Daredevil, stated, "In order for this to be worthwhile, it must be a fresh take, something distinct from before."
The ensemble cast of Daredevil: Born Again also features Margarita Levieva, Sandrine Holt, Michael Gandolfini, Arty Froushan, Nikki M. James, and Jon Bernthal returning to their respective roles as the Punisher.
Production of Daredevil: Born Again was underway in and around New York, with three months already completed for the 18-episode season on Disney+. However, production was suspended due to the WGA strike, leaving five months remaining in the schedule.
