NBC's Kristen Welker Expecting Baby No. 2 Via Surrogate With Husband John Hughes

Kristen Welker is excited to welcome her new baby boy.
The 47-year-old Meet the Press moderator shared on the Tuesday, May 14, episode of Today that she and her husband, John Hughes, are expecting their second child through a surrogate. In a video package, Welker expressed, "If you had told me five years ago that I would be the mother of a beautiful little girl and that we would be about to welcome a second baby, I would not have believed you because it has been such a long journey."
Welker and Hughes joyfully welcomed their daughter, Margot, in June 2021 through a surrogate, a moment they shared with viewers on Today. Welker candidly discussed her infertility struggles, sharing that doctors had informed her she couldn't carry a baby.
Hughes expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support they received, especially from strangers who reached out to them. Many shared their own experiences with infertility, creating a sense of connection and understanding.
Welker expressed her emotions about struggling with infertility, acknowledging the significant loss that comes with it.
She praised their surrogate as an "angel on Earth," highlighting the support and guidance she receives from their previous surrogate. Welker described their bond as a little family, all united in this journey.
The couple found out shortly after Welker became the new moderator of Meet the Press in September 2023 that they are expecting their second child. They shared that their son is due to arrive this summer.

Welker shared with cohosts Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie in the Today studio that Margot is eagerly looking forward to meeting her baby brother. She explained that she has been talking to Margot about their unique journey to welcoming the new addition to their family. Welker said, "I tell Margot that Mama had a boo-boo, so I couldn't carry her or her brother, but we are blessed to have someone special carrying her baby brother."
On the other hand, Hughes expressed how relying on each other has helped him and Welker overcome the obstacles they faced on their journey to becoming parents. He mentioned that while it can sometimes feel lonely, sharing their story is important to them. Hughes added, "We hope that by sharing our experience, it can resonate with others. Above all, I am filled with excitement for what the future holds for us."
Welker joked that she and Hughes will seek advice from Guthrie, 52, on raising boys. Guthrie has a daughter, Vale, 9, and a son, Charley, 7, with her husband, Michael Feldman. Kotb, 59, is a mother of two as well, with daughters Haley, 7, and Hope, 4, from her previous relationship with Joel Schiffman.
