However, the reasons for it came later – and when I initially edited the scene without those reasons, it did not work. It stood alone without context. This was all before we had filmed the Pom and Ethan fight, which added stakes to that particular sequence and gave weight to that death. We were determined to ensure that it held meaning and integrity. It is not driven by a desire for revenge – it becomes a test of character. It is not about whether or not a character dies. It is not about the group that character represents when they die. It is not about the emotion that character evokes in the protagonist when they die. It is about the value of that character's death. It is no more complicated than that: did they die for a reason?”
