Mortal Kombat 1 introduces new characters and a revised timeline, offering a more optimistic reality for iconic fighters.
The game will include a diverse lineup of fighters, featuring iconic Mortal Kombat characters as well as Kameo fighters. Returning favorites such as Shao Khan and Sindel showcase their devastating movesets and intense X-Ray attacks, while fresh faces like Motaro and Shujinko join the roster as new Kameo fighters.
Two beloved fighters from Mortal Kombat 1 have recently been announced, along with two classic Kameo fighters. The upcoming Mortal Kombat game by NetherRealm will bring a fresh start to the series, thanks to Fire God Liu Kang's actions in the aftermath of the DLC for Mortal Kombat 11. This new reality presents a more hopeful outlook, with various iconic Mortal Kombat characters experiencing positive changes. However, the newfound peace may not endure for long.
Since the official unveiling of Mortal Kombat 1, NetherRealm has gradually introduced the roster of playable fighters. The latest announcements include the highly anticipated return of Reptile, the reformed Ashrah, and the Chaosrealm cleric Havik. While the primary roster showcases Mortal Kombat 1's main characters, there is also a secondary selection of Kameo fighters available to assist players in battle. These supporting characters represent classic combatants from the original timeline and possess powerful combos that can be unleashed with a single button press.
Fans have the opportunity to expand the character rosters of Mortal Kombat 1, thanks to Ed Boon. Boon made an appearance at Gamescom 2023's Opening Night Live event, where he discussed the game with host Geoff Keighley and unveiled a new story trailer. The trailer confirms the return of the longstanding Mortal Kombat antagonist, Shao Khan, in the new timeline of MK 1. However, Shao Khan now serves as a general in Outworld, with ambitions of conquering Earthrealm through warfare. This puts him at odds with Empress Sindel, the current ruler of Outworld and mother to Mortal Kombat 1's twin princesses, Kitara and Mileena.
During the trailer, both Shao and Sindel showcase their unique movesets and brutal Mortal Kombat 1 X-Ray attacks. Shao dominates the battlefield with his battle axe and sheer strength, while Sindel utilizes her mystical powers and prehensile hair to enforce her authority. The battle concludes with Sindel delivering a gruesome Fatality on Shao, using her hair to break off his arms and then tearing his skull and spine from his body. However, Shao is given another chance to prove himself in a match against Raiden, Earthrealm's chosen champion, who is determined to prove himself to Liu Kang.
In addition to the combatants mentioned, the latest trailer for Mortal Kombat 1 also introduces a group of new Kameo fighters from previous entries. Back from Mortal Kombat 3, the centaur-like warrior Motaro aids Sindel with stinger tail strikes and a powerful X-Ray kick that crushes ribs. Additionally, the previously rumored hero from Mortal Kombat: Deception, Shujinko, joins forces with Raiden, employing a series of swift strikes and a crushing throat squeeze against General Shao.
As the release of Mortal Kombat 1 approaches in late September, fans are being treated to more glimpses of the game's extensive roster, all of which have been revamped for this installment. With a storyline that alters the timeline, Mortal Kombat 1 aims to introduce new dynamics and intriguing character interactions. The inclusion of the Kameo Fighters adds even more diversity and options for players to test their skills when the game finally launches next month.
Mortal Kombat 1 launches September 19 for PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.
