The Premier League returns for a new season, and on Monday Night Football, Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, and Karen Carney shared their predictions.
Will Manchester City, under the leadership of Pep Guardiola and with the addition of Erling Haaland, dominate once again? Or could Arsenal's activity in the transfer market be enough to secure them another title?
Can a revitalized Chelsea or Liverpool reclaim their place in the top four? Additionally, can any of the newly promoted teams endure the unforgiving competition of the premier league?
Furthermore, what can we expect from the new signings? Who among them will have the most significant influence on the 2023/24 season? And which players and managers will bring about unexpected surprises?
Neville, Carragher and Carney reveal all...
Who will claim the title?
Carney believes that Manchester City will emerge victorious, citing their strong and experienced team as the primary factor in her choice. Carragher and Neville, on the other hand, have chosen Arsenal.Carragher believes that while injuries to Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne could potentially pose a problem, he is confident that the squad has sufficient depth. He also highlights Pep Guardiola's relentless drive and predicts that Manchester City will maintain their high performance levels, as the manager has consistently achieved 90 points or more in a season.
I believe someone needs to exceed their level. It appears that other teams find it difficult to reach that level.
While Arsenal has made good signings, I can't help but compare them to Haaland and feel that Arsenal lacks someone of that caliber.
Neville believes that there are three factors he is counting on. After winning the treble, Manchester City might experience a slight decline. This is due to the challenges faced throughout the season, such as playing in Super Cups and the Club World Cup. Additionally, he mentions that Manchester City does not possess the largest squad.
Who will claim a top-four berth?
Carney: Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester UnitedCarragher: Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool
Neville: Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool
With Haaland in the team, he only sat out for three matches last season. If he were to be absent for 10 or 15 games, similar to his time at Borussia Dortmund, I believe this would present Arsenal with a genuine opportunity.
Carney: "I’ve put Liverpool in there because they’ve got a magnificent front six.
"With Chelsea, the jury’s still out for me on how clinical those front players are."
Carragher noted that Chelsea's concerns lie at both ends of the pitch. He mentioned the recent signing of goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who was deemed surplus by Brighton. Furthermore, Carragher acknowledged that Chelsea's development as a team is ongoing and will continue until the end of the season.
What about fifth and sixth?
Carney: Chelsea, NewcastleCarragher: Chelsea, NewcastleNeville: Chelsea, Aston VillaNeville: "I think Newcastle could have a really good run in the Champions League.
"I believe it engulfs you completely. Last season, we witnessed Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final, where those very players experienced a significant decline for approximately five to six weeks.
"If we were to compare a direct match-up between Newcastle and Aston Villa, Newcastle would emerge as the stronger team."
Who's heading down?
Karen: Villa may currently be competing in the Conference League, but it's worth noting that Unai Emery has successfully traversed this path in the past.Who's heading down?
Carney expressed admiration for Vincent Kompany's remarkable transformation of the team within a year. She also speculated that if Kompany sticks to his current approach, there is a possibility of witnessing high-scoring games similar to the one against Manchester City.
"I think the other teams have a little bit more Premier League nous."
Who will win the Golden Boot?
Carney: Mohamed SalahCarragher: Erling HaalandNeville: Erling HaalandCarney: "I just wanted a different name to be honest!
"It’s just whether Haaland stays fit enough. I like the Liverpool front six. Salah was a gut feeling."
Which signing will have the biggest impact?
Carney: Andre Onana (Manchester United)Carragher: James Maddison (Tottenham)Neville: Declan Rice (Arsenal)Carragher opined, "Concerning the departure of Harry Kane, it seems as though Maddison has become one of the key players. He possesses a hint of impishness in his playing style."
"Can we anticipate a challenging season for Spurs? Most likely, yes. However, if anyone can uplift them and propel them towards a top-four position, it would undoubtedly be Maddison."
Neville stated, "As I have predicted Arsenal to win the league, I had to select the Arsenal player whom I believe will contribute significantly to their success."
"With Rice, I think they will be stronger in midfield."
Who's the one to watch this season?
Karen: Kaoru Mitoma (Brighton)Carragher: Andoni Iraola (Bournemouth manager)Neville: Andre Onana (Manchester United)Carney: "I absolutely love Mitoma.
"As a former winger, his decision-making is exceptional. His dribbling is second to none. It’s a matter of time before Brighton get a massive pay cheque for him.
"I’m mesmerised by him. He always makes the right decision."
Carragher: "Iraola came in on the back of a lot of criticism for the club for getting rid of Gary O’Neil.
"But his impressive track record in Spain has earned him an outstanding reputation. I believe many other clubs will be eyeing their manager."
Neville: "Onana pulled off several remarkable saves in the final moments [against Wolves]. However, it is his penalty moment that will undoubtedly steal the spotlight."
"He’s got a big personality and you need a big personality in that position."
