Disney has officially announced that the live-action remake of Moana will be hitting theaters on June 27, 2025. The remake was first revealed in April, with Thomas Kail, known for directing the Broadway sensation Hamilton, set to direct. Dwayne Johnson, who originally voiced the character of Maui, will also be returning to reprise his role in the upcoming live-action version. The release date announcement follows recent changes to Disney's film schedule, which includes notable delays for several movies within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Moana is scheduled to open just two weeks after an untitled Pixar film and a month before an untitled Disney movie.
What To Expect From The Live-Action Moana Remake
Johnson is set to reprise his role as Maui in the upcoming live-action remake of Moana. However, Auli'i Carvalho will not be returning to voice the titular character, but will be joining Johnson as a producer to find the perfect actor for the role. While it remains unclear if any other cast members will return, the film is expected to follow the same storyline as the original animated movie, but with a live-action twist. Disney has previously adapted other animated films such as The Little Mermaid and plans to release a Snow White live-action remake in 2024, as well as Lilo & Stitch and a prequel to The Lion King titled Mufasa: The Lion King.
Despite the delays faced by blockbuster franchises such as the MCU, Star Wars, and Avatar, Disney has announced a release date for the live-action remake of Moana. While the film is currently scheduled for June 2025, fans eagerly anticipating the adaptation should remain vigilant in the event of any potential date changes. Nonetheless, with Dwayne Johnson set to reprise his role and Disney's confirmation of a release date, it seems probable that Moana will still grace the big screen in the summer of 2025.
