Tottenham have agreed a £47.5m fee with Nottingham Forest for Brennan Johnson.
The forward is now travelling to London for a medical before sealing the move before Friday's 11pm deadline.
Spurs have agreed to a fee of £47.5m for Johnson, including a 10% sell-on clause. However, they still need to hold further discussions with Forest regarding the payment structure.
Forest are now prepared to move forward with a deal for PSV midfielder Ibrahima Sangare, who is currently in London and available for a medical examination in the city.
Forest required the funds generated from selling Johnson to facilitate their pursuit of Sangare without violating Financial Fair Play rules. Despite Forest's reluctance to part ways with Johnson, they stood firm in anticipation of an offer close to their desired £50 million asking price.
The East Midlanders are set to replace Johnson with Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi.
Brentford were also keen on Johnson, while Chelsea cooled their interest in recent days.
Before moving for Johnson, Spurs also considered Ansu Fati from Barcelona, who joined Brighton on Friday, and Johan Bakayoko, who turned down a move to Brentford and is set to stay at PSV. Johnson, a 22-year-old, will be assisting in replacing Harry Kane, who transferred to Bayern Munich earlier this summer.
Spurs are keen to sign a versatile forward that can play in a variety of forward positions, rather than a traditional No 9.
Versatile Johnson would provide valuable depth
We football journalist Joe Shread:Johnson may not be a direct replacement for Harry Kane, but Tottenham is okay with that. Following Kane's departure to Bayern earlier this summer, Spurs are understandably eager to bolster their attacking options.
But the north London club are not seeking to replace the most prolific No 9 in their history with a player of a similar profile.
Spurs, on the other hand, are in search of a flexible forward capable of fulfilling multiple positions within Ange Postecoglou's front three - a criterion that Johnson meets. Throughout the previous season, the Welsh international effectively played as a winger, as well as in the supporting and central forward roles, as Forest manager Steve Cooper frequently adjusted his tactics.
Regardless of his position, Johnson consistently delivered outstanding results in terms of attacking metrics compared to his fellow teammates, as depicted in the graphic below.
Should Johnson make the move from the East Midlands to Spurs, he will have the opportunity to go head-to-head with Dejan Kulusevski on the right wing, Heung-Min Son on the left wing, and Richarlison in the central attacking position.
