Secret Invasion director Ali Selim has announced his intention to go into hiding amidst fears of receiving death threats from fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This decision comes after the show's rapid-fire revelations, reveals, and conclusion.

Secret Invasion is a TV miniseries based on the 2008 Marvel Comics storyline of the same name, produced for Marvel Studios' Disney Plus catalog. The story revolves around former SHIELD director Nick Fury and his collaboration with Skrull Talos to thwart the invasion plans of a group of shape-shifting Skrulls. In doing so, they expose the true extent of their infiltration into human society and the community of superhumans who protect it. Anticipation for the project was high, as it promised the return of several beloved MCU characters in the first episode of Secret Invasion.

Despite generating interest, the show still mostly received mixed reviews, as many pointed out that Marvel's poor pacing had compromised Secret Invasion. Despite these issues, the miniseries still made a significant impact, delivering numerous surprises and twists with far-reaching consequences, not only for the future of the MCU but also for beloved events and characters from the franchise's past. This level of upheaval seems to have made one of the key figures involved with the project anxious. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Selim playfully expressed his concerns, stating, "I'm worried that I might receive death threats because of this, and also because I'm the person responsible for removing Maria Hill. So I'm actually going into hiding now."

In response to a question about the revelation that Rhodey, a character closely associated with Tony Stark and known for piloting the War Machine suit, was actually a Skrull imposter while the real Rhodey was held captive elsewhere, Salim made a statement. Salim had previously shared his insights on the timeline of when War Machine was replaced. It is widely believed that the real Rhodey unfortunately missed the death and funeral of his best friend, Tony Stark.

This unintentional alteration of the storyline upset fans, as many consider Tony Stark and his death to be of great significance in the canon. Selim disclosed that Don Cheadle, who is set to star in the Armor Wars adaptation in the MCU, had never discussed with him the specific moment in the timeline when Rhodey was replaced. Selim acknowledged that the interpretation of this aspect is still open.

Secret Invasion is now available for streaming on Disney Plus.
