The content below contains spoilers for episode 5 of Secret Invasion on Disney Plus. The show is nearing its conclusion and is packed with Easter eggs for Marvel Cinematic Universe fans. In this episode, we learn more about Gravik's plan for the Skrulls and get some backstory for Nick Fury. These revelations also include several Easter eggs referencing previous chapters of the MCU, with Avengers: Endgame and Black Widow being the most prominent ones.
Avengers DNA Is Hidden
Named "The Harvest," this episode directly alludes to the Avengers' genetic makeup. In the first episode of Secret Invasion, Fury emphasized that the Avengers cannot assist in battling the Skrulls in order to prevent the Skrulls from impersonating them. Moreover, it becomes evident that Gravik is intent on obtaining the Avengers' DNA but has thus far been unsuccessful.
As the episode progresses, it is revealed that Fury anticipated Gravik's intentions and took measures to safeguard the valuable superpowered DNA. However, Fury's actions were executed after Gravik had already learned the codename for retrieving the DNA from the "battle for Earth." This battle refers to the conflict between the Avengers and their allies against Thanos and his forces. During the battle, Skrulls infiltrated the battlefield and collected the blood of fallen combatants, including Gravik.
Cull Obsidian And Flora Colossus
Fury argues that Gravik is specifically targeting the DNA of Captain Marvel because it encompasses her extraordinary longevity and capacity to manipulate energy. Therefore, it is reasonable to conclude that Gravik's true objective is to obtain her DNA rather than that of all the Avengers.
Fury interrogates G'iah regarding Gravik's acquired DNA, specifically mentioning Cull Obsidian and Flora Colossus (Groot). It is evident that Fury is already aware of Extremis presence in Gravik and G'iah's systems, thanks to the information shared by Talos on G'iah's survival techniques. Both of these DNA fragments exhibit their unique powers in this episode. Gravik deploys Cull Obsidian's immense strength and Groot's branch-like limbs against renegade Skrulls attempting to overthrow him.
Rick Mason Helps Fury
Notably, Frost Beast DNA is conspicuously absent from G’iah's discourse, even though it is prominently displayed on the computer screen in episode 2 of Secret Invasion. Surprisingly, this particular DNA sample is the only one that Gravik has yet to employ, leaving the viewers yearning for its forthcoming implementation. When Fury requires urgent travel to Finland, he receives assistance from pilot Rick Mason, who arrives with a plane and necessary provisions. During their interaction, Fury and Mason exchange some playful banter. Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will recognize Mason as a comrade of Natasha Romanoff in the film Black Widow. It suggests that he has maintained contact with Fury even after Romanoff's passing.
They both also make reference to the hellicarrier, the airborne vessel that made its debut in The Avengers within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. SHIELD had employed these hellicarriers, but the one previously operated by Fury is currently stored with "moth balls," as disclosed by Mason.
The Widow’s Veil
Natasha Romanoff employs a futuristic facial screen in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, effectively concealing her identity as she assumes the appearance of another individual. While this innovative technology remained unnamed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) until recently, it had previously made appearances in various films and TV shows. Notably, Natasha and Melina Vostokoff utilize these advanced screens to impersonate each other in their mission to infiltrate the notorious Red Room in the Black Widow movie.
Nick Fury’s Grave
: Contrary to fans' initial belief that SHIELD developed this technology, it has now been revealed that the Widow's Veil, along with its upgraded version, originated from the Red Room. This fact was discussed by Fury and Sonya.Upon the release of the Secret Invasion trailer, fans were left pondering over the dissimilarity between the exhibited headstone of Nick Fury and the one presented in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The fifth episode of Secret Invasion unravels this curiosity by revealing the existence of multiple graves for Nick Fury. Given that Nick Fury is a spy renowned for orchestrating his own deaths, this revelation seems entirely plausible for his character.
In the Marvel world, burying a significant object in a grave as a means of concealment has been done before. The TV series Agents of SHIELD employed a similar strategy, where records pertaining to Phil Coulson's demise and subsequent revival were discreetly stashed within his empty coffin.
